my friend told me that good internal linking of your website, will help to up search engine ranking.

So please guide me whats the benefits and how its helpful

yes, internal linking help full for search engine ranking but you should place keyword with hyper links in right title meta tag.

you need some level of internal linking to get all your pages connected together. you can also have a sitemap with links to all the pages or categories of your site. but keep the interlinking at a moderate level. don"t over do it as excessive cross interlinks can be bad.

sultanofseo has mentioned it correctly. You need it for seo but overliking is not good. Also put a sitemap on your site and link through meta tags, which will be much helpful for SEO.

Internal linking is not only important for the crawlability of your site and managing the flow of PR around your site, if done well it can also manage the flow of relevancy around your site. I kind of coined the phrase "flow of relevancy" a while back for lack of a better term.

We all know how Google likes your backlinks to be from relevant pages. Using techniques like Theme Pyramids (see Brett Tabke's post 4 down into the thread) for internal linking/navigation structures, you can imagine how having your parent page be about the same topic (just more general, less long tail) and your child pages being about the same topic (only more specific or long tail) and MAINLY linking to things above and below you in the site tree means that your internal backlinks are from relevant pages. While the idea has been around quite a while, it works GREAT for Google rankings if you have a site what is conducive to this type of internal linking structure.

 

For me internal linking can help bust your sites ranking on SE. So far there are many structure you can find to properly structure your internal links.
