The only people who are capable of changing the attitude of Indians towards Internet( i.e. in favour of more usage ) are the Indians in DP forum, lol:D :D

I once mentioned the reasons of low PC and Internet penetration in India in an orkut community and nobody was interested in that. Good to see a similar post here.. and all have jumped to it.

How many of you Indians have seen a Media coverage on any channel mentioning about the good and evil of the Net. The truth is Indian media always reports bad things about net more than it reports the good ones.

The newsprint media is better in India and reports many good things about net but its the TV channels which spoil covering what they call sensation !!

    Give a thought on this,

    Abhilash.

I think the lack of Internet penetration in India is more to do with cost of the internet and less to do with attitude of people or image of internet.

First of all a very small percentage of Indians own a PC. The cost of the PC in India is more or less the same as in US...but given the difference in incomes, a PC is out of reach of most Indians.

Many Indians use Cyber cafes to access the web. Their usage is limited to 3-4 hours a week at max. If you see the DP's User Map, you will rarely see more than 10 people from India on the map at a single instant. For US users it is rarely below 10. (I think DP has more than 20% of members from India). It's early morning in US right now and evening in India...and still there are many more US users online than Indians.

Thirdly, two-thirds of India lives in villages...where there is no broadband connection. To use internet for 1 hour daily on dial up would cost Rs 1000 monthly ....hardly anyone in the villages can afford such a luxury.

India cannot become an big market unless either the cost of bandwidth and PCs are brought down considerably or the purchasing capacity of the people increases dramatically - neither seems to be likely in the near future.

the bloom in India started a long time back with the entry of Yahoo MSN Google and few other majors , but it still has a long way to go. but i am sure more indians are the main framework behind major firms.
Sabeer Bhatia is from INDIA , he is the one who sparked a revolution by co-inventing Hotmail !:D

I think that within 5 years India's online market will be equivalent in size to that of the developed nations. The increasing penetration of internet/broadband, rise in number of credit cards, more disposable income and lesser shopping time, etc etc.... all these are indicators of a rising ecommerce market.

True that we dont have good payment mechanisms in place, but every month sees 2 new Indian companies venturing into this arena. Sooner than later, we will have robust systems in place.

hard to happen !!! lets hope.

being an indian even i have tried to convince people and make them aware of online transaction but the fact is that only about 0.0001% of indian population is daring enough to make online transaction. and still they prefer the traditional way of sending/ receiving money.

I totally agree that Online MArketing Is Going to be The Next Big Thing In India.
Thats tHE Reason I have built www.indiashopping.info an alternative to ebay.
If anyone visiting this site kindly provide feedback on its look and the future chances on becoming popular.
