I dont think it is really important or that matters for google.
If the server is way too slow then It does matter. for SE's as well Site visitors.

US hosting is find for country specific TLD, ie. .co.uk .me.uk etc

If you were using a .com address but targetting UK visitors you would want UK based hosting.

    Karinca,

if you're using a .com tld you'll need to hosted in the Uk in order to show up in the "uk only" results of Google and MSN.

If google really wanted to be picky they have the capability of
searching whois automatically to see who a domain is registered to, including which country, but seems like that would be a lot of trouble for them to go to.

What BFTUK said is correct. However just because a website says "UK Host" it doesn't necessarily mean the servers they use are in fact in the UK, so obviously you need to check that out first.

Can anyone suggest a good host with UK based servers? They are much less competative than US hosts, and I can't find many positive reviews for the remotely affordable ones.

I'm wondering what percentage of UK searchers select the "pages from the UK" option.

I have a dedicated server with http://www.a2b2.com/, you must specify that you want UK based hosting though. Oh, and if you're a UK resident you will be charged VAT.
