I was wondering if having a Facebook login page for a site really does that much for traffic or repeat visitors. It seems like this might be to the web moderator's disadvantage since you cannot obtain as much information as you would receive with a custom profile form. I know that the custom profile form still technically exists, but whenever I log into a site with a facebook login now, I never really go back to my settings to change my profile. For example, I logged into a site the other day with my facebook. However the only information it acquired was my email, the goofy photo I had on there, and my name. But the site's profile typically would ask for so much more like demographic info, custom settings, and the ability to upload a photo that is not the facebook photo. Doesn't this hurt a site's data collection efforts? Thanks!
That's a good question. The facebook login page would definitely cut into the amount of information the site gets to collect from an individual user. However, I wonder if that cost is offset by the benefit of the streamlined login. Would you have logged into that site if you had to go through a drawn-out registration process in order to do so? The facebook login process allows the site to get more comments and more participation without having to let people comment anonymously.
Thanks for the feedback tjcreation. I agree that it is much more convenient to quickly login with a facebook account and I'm sure it would increase my user registration substantially. However, I am using wordpress and I installed a plugin for a facebook login. Unfortunately, when someone logs in through this, it does not capture their email. Instead it just gives me an email with lots of numbers, which is clearly just generated as a filler. Do you think that every site that has fbook login is sacrificing email capture for ease of log in? Or is there a way to actually capture the email through facebook log in. It just seems strange to me that sites would sacrifice building their email database knowing how valuable an email is. And since I am doing an article directory I would almost need to have the email to contact authors when their post is approved. Once again thanks for the insight!
@jwarnimo,,,To attract more traffic you can add social login to your website. It will enable the users to login through their exisiting ID on popular sites, so they dont have to go through lengthy registration process.Check out LoginRadius, it provides plugins for social login, its awesome!!! whereas, capturing email is concerned, it offers rich user profile data through which u can store user email in ur database.Social analytic feature is also there... the good thing no coding skills required for integrating it!!!
Yes..it matters and it gives more traffic and more visitors to your websites. Its one of the best option for promoting a website.
I think in that kind of situation, you'd want to require an email either as a login or in addition to the Facebook login. I think users appreciate the ease of use from a Facebook login, but they would also understand the need for contact. I haven't used Facebook logins so I don't know the specifics, but I wonder if there would be a way to customize it to your needs. Perhaps the system allows you to contact the users through that filtered email?
