I have seen people talking about h1 tag been one of the important part for seo.

Use them, Use them, Use them!

I have seen plenty of sites rank without H1 tags, but they do help. So why not use every advantage possible. And with CSS you can match the look and feel of your site without a big ugly header at the top of your page.

 

H1 tags help, no doubt about it.
But don't forget it's just one of the factors responsible for your rankings.

 

Yes off course they are useful. But use them wisely ;-)

 

h1 or h3 as long as it's a heading it helps

 

make sure that you only use each one once though, 1 h1, 1 h2, 1 h3, etc.

Why use each only once?
H1 I can understand - main heading; but surely you can have more than one sub heading as in:
<h1>main heading</h1>
<h2>first sub heading</h2>
<h3>first minor heading</h3>
<h3>second minor heading</h3>
<h2>second sub heading</h2>
<h3>minor heading</h3>
That would be the natural layout of a page. And you're saying Google doesn't like it?

Use the H1 tags, they really help and if possible, use IBP9 as well, it will help you rank highly.
