History shows that what was white hat SEO, or let say OK SEO, can turn into black hat SEO after a Google Update! There is always a grey zone or ambiguous where SEO can play... After only ethics defines the width of the grey zone.

Gray Hat SEO is a combo of both white hat and black hat seo, to some extent, it can be allowed but I will suggest you to better go for white hat seo as if some black hat technique is caught by Google officials they can penalize your site, and extreme case they can ban your site if they find it appropriate to do.
