Is Google still your primary visitor source?

Discussion in 'Traffic Analysis' started by michael_angeloh, Nov 17, 2005.

    Google's SearchEngine has been the primary source for visitor traffic to my website network almost since it's inception in 2002 generating some 66% of my total traffic numbers. Like many others I experienced a radical decline during the first few stages of "Jag" and although about 75% of my Google SERP has returned in the past week I have noticed that the pattern of my traffic generated through the top-3 SE's has changed namely MSN and Yahoo! referrals have increased significantly.

    For example whereas Google was referring around 66% Yahoo! 18% MSN 14% other sources 2% the SERP referrals as of today are:

    MSN 28% Google 26% Yahoo! 25% Ask Jeeves 3% and other sources (link partners etc) : around 18%.

    This is quite the departure from my stats just around 6-weeks ago now. I'd be interested in what others have found regarding their visitor traffic referrals. Is Google still your #1 source of website traffic or has the equasion changed for you as well..?

    I notice a rise in Yahoo and MSN only when my Google serps drop. Otherwise it's still mostly Google for me. Though it seems like Yahoo and MSN are being a bit more helpful lately.

    Varies by site really - but overall Google is still the king of the hill. I have yet to see yahoo or msn make a real dent in the keywords that I track.

    One of my sites recently came out of the Sandbox. When that happens - google becomes your primary!

    Google is responsible for ~30% of all traffic coming to my main site.

    Search Engine share:
    67% Google
    16% Yahoo!
    10% msn

    Google is my no.3 or no.4 source, but is top for the search engines. Now if they ever let me out of the sandbox, that might change, but I have to say I am really glad they are not my major source for just that reason: I don't want to be a victim of their whims.

    For me, Google represented 30% SE traffic at the high point, in Sept. I only started building sites 10 months ago, though, so I'm still new to G's eyes. I had only recently started to get good Google traffic when Jagger cut a lot of my traffic down. It looked like I rebounded for a while, but most pages are still way down traffic-wise b/c of new algorithim, or recovering from a penalty of some sort. I can't figure out which it is.

    Adwords accounts for a decent percentage of traffic to my main site, but awstats doesn't seem to differentiate between Adwords and Google SE traffic, is that right? Does Webalizer, or any other stats program? Forunately, my primary source of visitors is bookmarkers/return visitors.

    good-morning michael_angel,

    although i hold top ranking for the same keyword phrases via MSN & GOOGLE, i couldn't survive without the G traffic...

    Google == 70% of thy traffic per say...
    MSN == less then 10% i guess...
    Yahoo == less then 5%...
    ASK.COM == less then 5%
    then there are others...

    have a nice weekend...

    sincerely,
    c.t.adams-/// :D

    Google represents about 65% of the traffic that we get, and about 95% of all search engine traffic.

    Of course, you'll need to put this into context:

    ~ 15,000 unique visitors per day
    ~ 35,000 page views per day

    Google giving you 10% of your referrals when you've only got a few hundred visitors per day is a pretty meaningless number.

    Google brings in the highest percentage of traffic by a long way but only for sites that aren't sandboxed. For newer sites, I ignore Google as a complete waste of time.

    Before the lastest update, I got nearly 75% of my traffic from Google, but now it is down to around 50%. Many of my former search terms have not come back to page 1 listings.

    This month...... 3.5 GB of traffic total month to date

    just combining the big 3

    Yahoo - 86%
    Google - 8%
    MSN - 6%

    Compared to August..... 28.41 GB of traffic for the month

    Yahoo - 55%
    Google - 40%
    MSN - 5%

    This has been devastating, to say the least.

    For the five top KWs, I am top twenty in Yahoo for all of them, and Top twenty in Google for just one. Yet my SE traffic is

    Google: 89.92%
    Yahoo: 6.08%
    MSN: 1.95%

    The Google total is 44% of ALL traffic to my blog.

    I should also note that the 89.92% is
    Google Images : 60.69%
    Google: 29.23%

    So Images , whether that's good or bad, accounts for nearly 30% of all my traffic.

    Thanks to everyone here for your helpful input. Really does show how divere SERP and SEO mechanics are for each of us. A few follow ups please:

    I have over 2K images on my sitewide but not getting anywhere near the return you are. Are these hits all coming from your blog and is there anything special you do to garner such a high return rate for your images..?

    Good Morning from Hawaii MrAfrica..! Are you in Africa.?

    Not sure as to the answer to your question. I've heard the term "Awstats" many times before but not sure what that means..?

    Stephen... be interested to know what your #1 and #2 sources are.?

    Crazy... Can you tellus where the other 70% of your traffic comes from.?
