The first question is, how old is the site? If its less then 6 months old, this is perfectly normal. If the site is less then 1 year old, its also normal, but not as bad as a young site.

If your site is 2 - 3 years old, it is not normal for the site to jump around in the search engine.

If it's a new site not older then 1 year then it's mostly be the "Google dance"

One of the solutions is to find some quality and really authority links which could stick and glue the rankings. The matter of fixing the top rankings has always been the concerning point among webmasters and nothing but links can do the job.

This won't answer your question, but I have few sites (few of them 3+ years old, few of them 1-1.5y/o) on which last couples of weeks I see great fluctuations in Google's rankings.
After few days, they return to their usual rankings, but in another several days they are gone!
Still trying to explain it somehow to myself....although most of the time they rank good (as usual)....

All the mentioned sites are authority ones, with natural links and completely family friendly. Never sold links from them(they do not have any dofollow out-links) and they used to be in the top 5 results for some very competitive words; then they go to page 4-5 and again return to the first few results on page 1..in a matter of days!

Not sure about the rest of my sites as I do not monitor them so well...

I've noticed the same thing on one of my sites that is 9 years old. Large fluctuations. One day I'm on front, next I am on 5th page, then back again. I have also noticed that I jump around on the pages 1-3 times a day! It is getting quite madding to deal with.

Its called Google Dance, as your sites get older, you will notice that it won't be happening with your sites.

Ranks changes all the time, but usually not THAT much as you describe.
Maybe you need more strong backlinks to make it a little more stable.
