Unfortunately, this kind of news can only hurt all of the players (especially publishers) as advertisers continue to scratch their heads.
As an AdWords client myself, I can say that I'm starting to wonder about lots of things....

i disagree. first look at worldwide internet growth. it's not that great in the US, but some countries are seeing huge gains. this will only continue in the future as they develop economically.

second, americans are spending quite a bit more time online rather than watching tv, radio, etc. advertising hasn't switched over at the same rates, but this only presents even greater opportunities for growth

I would accept the fact that there will be some fraud but Google is working to minimize it. Pay per click is still vastly more measurable than traditional outlets like radio, TV, and print and is still in the early stages of adoption. There will be some fraud but Google will limit it.

All forms of advertising havesome sort of fraud attached to it

The fact it, PPC has been around since the late 90's and if fraud was such a big issue PPC woudnt exist today.

Every credible source is predicting huge increases in overall spending in PPC market this year...so I'm not sure what you're basing that statement on.

Yeah, I'm not so sure any of that fraudulent click talk is going to make much of a dent in the market, to be honest.
Most market indicators point to HUGE gains in the advertising sector for both sides- publishers included.

You can still make a lot of money using PPC. I get 3% conversion most times...maybe 5% of the other 95 is fraud (or whatever the number may be), but that 3% is still very profitable.

For this reason, I don't mind the fraud as much, and think of any chargebacks I get from Google as a gift. To me, some fraud is just a part of the game. Of course it could be better, but overall, I think Google does a pretty good job.

It is purely numbers game IMO. If advertisers make money they'll continue to advertise if they start losing ..... won't. Today I made some $$ . Tomorrow is another day. I am sure Google has analyzing software which can give them indication of suspicios clicks and afterwods human revision of those. ...... Any publisher who wants to stay in business wouldn't like to get the email "your account has been closed ......." by Google. I don't think click fraud will shut down the PPC business. Way too much money, opportunities, and investment is in it.

    You are right.
The advertisers will ultimately decide whether any system is good for their bottom line (or NOT).
