It's a good portion of the way there now. It will be interesting to see how things develop over the next few years.

That's just propaganda video to disguise their real master plan. After all, that link IS from youtube. I would have to say for any real conspiracy nuts, google could be a useful tool towards world domination. Illuminati, Masons, Trilateral commission, Bilderburghs ... just take your pick.

I read somewhere that google becomes twice as big ever 9 months. That's scary!

Maybe if, Microsoft buys Yahoo!, we will see some fierce competition as MS does have what it takes to go worldwide and push YPN to it's limits but the way I see it, it will months to see Microsoft buying Yahoo and then pushing YPN and spreading it worldwide to produce results like AdSense/Adword did, only that will take a good year or two. Google will be far more stronger by then if you compare it from today.

I believe Google's monopoly over internet search (if that does indeed happen) is going to heavily affect us, the webmasters. Already you can see, google asking you to "report paid links", already they have tools for you to develop sites specifically optimized for Google and how they want things.

This is just silly; it's not true at all. Google has never told anybody what they can and can't do. They don't have any authority.

No you don't! You can do anything you want on your web site. Google has published some guidelines to help us understand their engine better, but we can ignore them if we want. Google doesn't owe any of us a listing or search rank, and they've been doing a better job lately of handing those out on merit. The better quality sites are getting onto the first page, instead of just the best optimized. That's good for anybody who ever looks for information on the web.

You can sell links no matter what Google thinks of it. Don't expect them to continue passing on PageRank, but why should they? Paid links don't imply quality, and they interfere with the quality of the search engine. If you can send traffic through the links, people will pay for that. If not, then the only reason they're there is to artificially interfere with Google's algorithm - they should be able to improve their own intellectual property.

They can't gain complete market power until they crush Yahoo, but I can't see that happening anytime soon.

I see Google's market share reaching 80% then stalling. They won't be able to control 90%, because there are always going to be the naive internet users who don't know about the differences in search engines. So since their standard homepage is MSN, they'll use live search.

But is 80% a monopoly, yes....but I don't think G will abuse its power as much as other companies would in that position

For a lot of people 'google' is a verb, it means to search. To look something up on the net is to google it. There's nothing comparable in terms of branding.

very good point there as well, i know i use that term all the time...never thought of it as branding...lol...but now that you mention it...that's gotta be one of the best branding successes in history...to become a verb :D

No, I don't think that they will have a monopoly. For example me. I started to use Yahoo image search although I previously used Google.

Difficult to see anyone stopping them until there is a change in the way we search - a paradigm shift to a new search method, something other than a simple text search typed into a bland UI
