Having taken my first domain name on Feb, 1996 when only NetSol was available I've then switched to other registrars, Tucows, Register, GoDaddy (+resellers), then NameCheap who's the one I like the most. As of today my portfolio is spread between Moniker, GoDaddy (recent buys) and NameCheap (hand regs).

That is where you are wrong.
Do not confuse popularity with reputability. While Godaddy.com is undoubtedly the biggest domain registrar, it is notorious for poor customer relations. Just have a look at this link

Stay away from Godaddy for sure, and go with Name.com or Namecheap.com they are far better than Godaddy.

I agree, Godaddy services kinda suck, especially for hosting. Try to find something else...

I had a domain with them, I had some problems renewing it and now they want $80.00 for it. So no, they are not reliable. They are thieves who will sucker you out of money.

    name.com
    namecheap.com

my good domains are always through namecheap.. the cheap and trial ones thru the daddy ( coz they give me 0.99 and 1.99 domains and renewals) . apart from the junk and the mess they make.. they are still the cheapest whom wont shut their business just like that.. so they are safe as long as ur ALERT with wat u do with them.. if u want to be careless and SAFE.. use namecheap.. they are really good.

i have been using GD for domains since 3 years and found its best among the others.

But for hosting/ server u might get a better option though i have not seen any down time since last one year for my site.
