Is GoDaddy an ok host for Magneto?

I'm setting up my first online store using the free Magneto edition. I've always used GoDaddy for hosting, and it's always been ok - but then again, all my other sites are simple and fairly low traffic. So I just purchased a domain through GoDaddy, and a theme through TemplateMonster, and it's time to choose a host. Will I be ok with the basic $5/mo GoDaddy hosting for the first week or so, at which point I can scale up to one of their better plans, or should I get a different host? Also, I have absolutely no idea how to install this thing, so if one of the hosts offers automated installation or something, that'd be a plus. Thanks team! :)

I wouldn't recommend Godaddy for any sort of hosting.

    What would you recommend then?

With the template purchase from TemplateMonster, I got an offer for free 12 months hosting with Just Host, on the Just Host Unlimited plan. Any good?

    +1 Agreed.

Personally I have recommended GoDaddy for domains, but not for the hosting aspect of things. If you're just starting out, likely wont be any need to scale up to a larger package so quickly, but I would suggest going with a provider who can easily upgrade you if needed. I believe if you're looking to install Magento through an automated, 1 click installer, you'll need to find a host running Softaculous or Installatron. Fantastico doesn't provide it in their list of scripts to auto-install. However any good host would likely be willing to help you install it, even if they aren't running an automated script installer.

PS - GoDaddy/JustHost are both "unlimited" providers, and as we all know, unlimited doesn't exist, and these types of services are usually oversold ;) However depending on the provider and how they manage their servers, you may likely be alright with this kind of provider. Just when your site gets busier and gets some traffic flowing, they'll be quicker at disabling your account than a provider who limits their resources in a reasonable manner.

I signed up with JustHost.com because they gave me 12 mo free, said I can cancel any time with no charges, and agreed to install Magneto and the theme for me. I saved the chat transcript just in case. I'll let you guys know how it goes once my account is set up later today! :)

North1, yep, elicitservers pretty much reiterated exactly my concern. Godaddy is great for domains, not so great for hosting. Can't go wrong with 12 months free, and of course if it doesn't work out, you can just move. :) I'd definitely give them a try.

Godaddy is only good for domains. Not for hosting.

Never go for hosts that offer unlimited bandwidth. because they're not unlimited and after a certain level of cpu usage they will ask you to pay more.
Go for some thing that offers limited but enough , like myhostbots.com , they have 1TB bandwidth on their silver plan which costs $5.5($60 if paid yearly)
and you will not need more than that

Magneto is a bit resource hog script so I would not recommend to host with Godaddy. Be caution - their expertize is domain name and not hosting. I have never seen any domain company can become a good hosting provider, even Namecheap.com.

That's a good point. Magento is hard on the hardware and a cheap host may not be the best solution as you could get pulled-up for resource over-usage. That's not to say it won't work, but if you're using Magento I'd be inclined to select a host who specifically supports it and is aware of how it works.

I suppose the best way to know this is to contact their support team directly and ask them any question you are interested in.

We're gonna launch the alpha version of the store tomorrow, so I guess we'll see how it goes. I also submitted a support ticket with JustHost, just in case. We'll see how it goes. Thanks team! :)

Dear god people, STAY AWAY FROM JUSTHOST.COM! Ugghh, what a bunch of idiots.

    1. Their welcome email says to email for *tech* support, but after half a day someone emailed back saying it's only billing support, and they didn't even forward my emails to tech support.
    2. They promised over and over to install Magento, and then refused the moment I activated.
    3. They referred me to their 1-click install app, not knowing it didn't even support Magento.
    4. Their web interface doesn't work with Google Apps MX (wtf?), and they have to set it up manually.
    5. I also asked them to set up a subdomain for our email, and they couldn't even set it up correctly - it still doesn't work!

I just canceled. Wow, just wow: how do these people stay in business? I guess I know why they host for free - I shoulda known.

That being said, does anyone else have suggestions for a good host? :)

Try Rackspace Hosting. This provides good service. Really. But don't look at the price. OK?

    Unlikely.

Magento requires additional server facilities (like PDO) as well as using significant processing power - it's best on a server specifically setup to host just magento and dedicated to your use - neither of which you'll get for $5/m

It's possible to *install* it on some cheap-hosts, as to whether it will stay up, remain accessible, or fast enough for you to get any sales through your shop - that's questionable - no point driving traffic to a site that takes so long to show the products that the clients have all left to buy elsewhere.

For ecommerce you really need to think of it as a business, and what kind of hosting would suit the needs of that business - don't expect quality champage to come from a diet-coke price-plan !

I think installing script is not JH business they just provide the hosting.

What you expect the with the cheap price?

I hope it would work for you. I still recommend to stay away from Hostgator for Magneto even with their vps or dedicated server. Their server are not capable for the script and will not worth the money.
