In my personal experience no, not like they may have been in the past. Unfortunately Message Boards in general are falling to the wayside. So Marketing not so much, but Networking...yes.

 

for seo you will not get any value. maybe for traffic it worth the effort

Anyway, I think forums and forum marketing are great. We get to hang out with like minded people which is all good because working on the internet can be a very lonely place at times. The support you get is also very helpful.

As far as the marketing side goes - also good to help and have conversations with others on a certain topic. Another benefit is that people get to see what you have to offer on your website via your links.

it depends on a kind of forum. If your signature is only visible to forum members (like here on DP), it limits your views a lot plus requires to stay active to get it shown in the recent posts that still receive member views.

That is opposed to forums that show member signatures publicly - so any search engine traffic to the forum also shows your signature. This expands your audience a lot and does not require stay active (but rather to participate in threads that are ranked high by search engines).

 

yes it is woth the time and effort, especially if you are posting at a forum that caters to what you are selling, because there will be thousands of people there just waiting to buy what you sell them.

 

Some forum sig links do actually get indexed by Google so it's a no brainer to help people, get advice and place a link at the same time. But don't do it just to place a link.
