It depends on what you going to use it for ?

And the history of the expired domains ...

    Alot of factors to consider.

There are too many factors! A domain that was originally registered five years ago would be given more ranking value than a domain originally registered for the first time this year, if ALL OTHER SEO factors were the same.

If that expired domain was banned from Yahoo or Google, good luck getting it un-banned, even if you have a legitimate site with legitimate content. (Google is more responsive than Yahoo, but why mess with the insanity to begin with?)

I have registered plenty of domains for clients that are brand new domains and with proper SEO techniques, have them on the first page of Google in short order.

It takes a LOT of work to get that kind of result, regardless of whether a domain is new or old. And there are so many other factors that if done properly, the age of the domain is not relevant.

One risk factor is if the expired domain had previously been banned at Google or Yahoo. How long had it been expired? If it was recently expired, go to google and then Yahoo - and at each do a search on site:thatdomain.com and see if any pages are listed at either. If they are, then the site had not been banned. If there are not, it may not have been banned but there's no way to tell.
