Is dropping 70 spots in one day a Google Dance???

    hey guys:

About six weeks ago I started backlinking w/ a new anchor text and was ranked around #290 in my niche. Well - over the last six weeks I sky-rocketed to #25 and held steady at that position for about two weeks. Then today, I dropped to #95.

I've done other sites before - and I've seen them do the google dance and then settle down. Haven't seen anything like this. What do you guys say? - is this a google dance where my site will bounce back up or maybe I shot up to quickly and it's settling around #95.

(also - I will keep backlinking)

looks very normal to me. initially you get good jum in ranking and then it falls behind as google has more date to rank your site by that time. just keep building backlinks TIL you rank high which is the key. most of the people just give up too soon expecting miracle.

SEO - A game of patience

Even after 3-4 months some of my sites are still dancing!!

I find it settles after approx 6 months - What does everybody else think?

Check the serps with allinanchor if the results are similar then there is no link penalty. if they are much different then your links have been discounted, and you need to get more links.

Check the serps with allintitle,, if they are similar then there is no site penalty. If they are much different then there is a penalty on site, could be duplicate content.

It sounds normal to me too. Just keep backlinking and refreshing your content and your site will do just fine.

If this is a new site, do not expect steady rankings until the site is about 6 - 8 months old.

Even at 6 months I have still seen sites float around a little bit.

    I use these guys http://www.allno1.com/google_serp/multi_country_rank_checker.asp

If you want you can give us the domain name and the keyword and we'll check it out for you to let you know.

Also yes, the dance is normal, i find esp. if your website has affiliate links on it!

Your site may have been in the Google "honeymoon" period. Google often gives new sites a boost in the SERPs during the first 60 days to "feel them out" before assigning them a steady place in the rankings.
