Is Dreamhost good as a domain registrar?

Originally I was looking for the cheapest registrar, but then I found threads like this one: http://forums.digitalpoint.com/showthread.php?t=174558&highlight=cheapest+domain+registrar and I got a bit scared at how bad some of them can be. Anyways, I'm planning on buying hosting with dreamhost, and I want to buy a couple domains, so I figured I might as well get the domains there, too. Now I'm just curious, does anyone have any major complaints about how dreamhost handles domains?

 

dreamhost is good for hosting, you can try namescheap, 1and1, goDaddy for registering domains, if you want reliability then go for hostgator, they are best hosting providers and their price is nearly same with dreamhost.

 

I heard that godaddy was bad for registering domains, they'll hold your domain ransom and then charge you $100s to get it back, but are you saying that dreamhost is bad as a registrar? In case I ever want to change hosts? I'm already set on getting dreamhost.

Always buy your domain where you are not hosting.

You have a lot more control and safety that way. Godaddy, domainsite, namecheap are all fine places to register. I am sure there are other that are fine also.

 

Ok thanks. Now does anyone have a cheap registrar that they recommend? From what I've seen, the cheaper it is the worse the quality/customer service is, so I'm looking for a happy medium.

 

I am using several different domain registrars and so happy so good.
The ones I am using been mentioned already: GoDaddy (I have no far so problems at all), NameCheap, DomainSite, and Dynadot. I also use 1and1 (which is $5.99 a year) but 1and1 has a lot of complains so does RegisterFly. Though, I have no problems with them so far. Except RegisterFly has a lot of technical problems and is probably the worst or so for the majority.
Overall the medium ones I will say you can try NameCheap or Dynadot.

Ok, I think I'm going to go with domainsite, although I already have an account at dotster because someone gave me a free domain, does anyone have any feedback for them?

 

Dotster is good except the domain prices are pretty high. About $5 or $6 more for each domain than other registrars.

 

Use tierra.net they are awesome i have around 150 domains registered with them

 

It is the best price you are likely to find. Basic is all you need for normal usage.

Look for some professional registrar like godaddy and namecheap.
