    hi

i downloaded a bit torrent for my laptop last year just to download music to my iPod so i could listen to them and i have a very important concerning question.

is it illegal to download a bit torrent in order to download songs, games, software or other? well i have been told my my bro that it is and that the more i do it, the more 50% chance likely the police might find me and i could be sent to jail for illegal downloading from the copyrighted music which was owned by the musicians and bands themselves unless its not.

i find this a better way than buying music via iTunes or just the shops like HMV

if its not copyrighted then you can share files, freeware software and so on.

but downloading movies, bands music is generally illegal.

As powerlifer stated, the BitTorrent protocol itself is not illegal, it just all depends what the content of those torrents are. However, I don't think you'll be jailed for downloading copyright content for personal use, and the chances of them prosecuting you will be slim unless you are doing lots and lots of this.

Depends where. I think, but I'm not sure that torrenting copyrighted material such is games and software is illegal in USA and UK.
I heard something like that a while ago, now don't know if it's true.

Based on what I knew, Stuffs that are copyrighted are considered as illegal to download but people just can't stop those..

It`s depending from what kind of files you are downloading and also with what purpose you are using them, i don`t think you can get jailed and there would not be a problem if you get files for personal use not for selling them .

I guess it depends on what you are downloading. I know music and movies are not allowed.
