Is "Domain privacy" useful and necessary when we buy a domain name?

    Hi guys,

I wanted to buy a domain name with a hosting plan. But i don't understand what mean "Domain privacy"? it's for $9 a year. So, should i include it with my domain name? it's really useful? or just a simple option?!

    Thank you.

Really boils down to personal preference there. I for one REALLY prefer privacy on my domains. I want there to be a way for people to get an email to me - but not get spam. I don't want my name or address out there. My registrar does not charge for privacy so that really is a major plus for me since using another registrar means the real domain cost is for the domain plus privacy (i.e. not their advertised rate). If you are curious - I use these guys: http://www.namesilo.com

When you purchase a domain name the information you enter under "registrant", etc. (name, address, etc.) is listed in a public database called whois. When you choose the domain privacy option that information is masked from the public. It's useful for individuals who don't want their contact information to be publicly accessible and associated with the domain name. If the domain name is for a business I recommend not using the privacy option, by keeping the contact information publicly listed in the whois database there is more perceived credibility for the business.

Think simple. if you don't want anyone to know your personal domain info, just pay for the fee yearly.

The domain privacy eventually is to protect one's information and mostly to prevent email spam.

I would prefer domain privacy, it doesn't hurt and just saves you from any potential harrasment.

It is not much use unless you are doing something mischievous with your domain name :)
