Is spending 10 hours a week buying up domains a profitable business? How much could one make doing this?

You can make a tidy sum with domains but the chances are slim unless you are prepared to spend a lot of money buying up lots of domains and a lot of time educating yourself on how / where / when to sell them. I don't think 10 hours a week would be enough for what you appear to have in mind.

Try www.dnforum.com and www.dnjournal.com for an idea of what you would have to learn about the market and also the competition.

I would tend to agree.. not saying I sit here and look for dead domain names every day, but yeah I have done it, some times alot more hours then that, a couple of years ago we had a client as a reseller on one of our servers, they left owing $$$, they let one of there domain names expire, we registered it 3 months later, then about a year later we sold it to Lions Gate Entertainment for a fair amount of money, its now a major motion picture

I don't think it's worth being in anymore unless you already have great domains. A lot of domains are taken. the only way to stay on top is buy domains for hot products that come out.

it's never too late to get in the game but right now it is definitely very competitive and will be extremely hard to turn in a profit if you are just starting out.
