I have 2 sites that are listed.

Site 1: This month, 1 visitor out of 641137 that used a search engine to find my site, used DMOZ.

Site 2: Zero DMOZ referrals out of 19647 search engine referrals.

    Total: 1 out of 660,784

It may be the largest directory, but I get way more traffic from MFA's, scrapers, and even foreign-language scrapers. There's a dutch one, a polish one, and a finnish one that bring in a noticeable trickle of traffic.

Your question is: "is it the best?" Yes, but only if your criteria is size.

I do, most notably from 2 niche directories. One is a directory for art glass, and the other for glass in general. Both sites have decent ranking. The art glass directory has a lot of content, photos, etc., and therefore interested and targetted visitors. The general glass directory is a straight forward directory, but people do seem to use it.

I've seen the occasional traffic coming from Joe Ant and Illumirate - both as rare as DMOZ referrals. The thing is, if you are looking for my "square spinning widgets" - my a few of my sites show up way higher in the rankings than all "square spinning widget" categories in any directory.

Several years ago, the DMOZ category for "square spinning widgets" showed up on Google's SERP #1. Then it fell to page 2... and now, for the past couple of years, it's nowhere to be seen, and sinking deeper.

I do think that Google has, quite rightly, severely demoted the hopelessly outdated and dull DMOZ categories, and boosted the far more useful, up-to-date and interesting Wikipedia so much that webmasters are complaining!

There are loads more directories more popular than the examples you gave there such as craigs list, yell.com and the big guns, why do people tend to ignore them in this forum?
