Since dmoz is down it is good to discuss about some thing about dmoz

I have only question that always run in my mind is dmoz runs on a database

Though your answer may be no

Give me valid reasons about the working how these html pages are generated and about how links are added if Dmoz does not run on a database?

Yes: it runs on a database. From what I've read on here it runs on a very old-fashioned database.

I believe it uses cgi to store information directly on the file system and then generates static html pages from these files. As far as what I would consider a database, no it doesn't run on a database (from what I've read).

I wonder how much effort it would take for Dmoz to update its entire technology and migrate to a newer, faster system? It strikes me that it really needs to, because it comes creaking to a standstill far too often. I suppose that's the main problem with being one of the web's oldest directories.

That might explain the current standstill, though one would expect an announcement of some sort on that.

Actually having to witness how much almost everybody here seems to be concerned about a "running ODP" (the well-being of the ODP) it's heart-melting to say the least!:D
