I believe directories affectiveness has decreased because the directories themselves offer no value to the average user. What needs to happen is for the directories to morph into something that's actually of interest to the punters out there surfing the web.

Niche directory links are the best. They are on topic, are usually created to benefit surfing users as opposed to webmasters and tend to list less spam.

Free directory links still help. We'd all like some of them, just make sure you submit to the good directories like the ones listed at info vilesilencer.

Directory Submissions dead????? Well let me put it this way....Directories were and are still good....the only catch is that you should look at good Search engine friendly directories. I agree because of newer methods of getting links, the directories have slipped down the ranking, but they still are a good and reliable source of links Directory submissions are still effective in link building, although the impact is minimal, but it’s there nonetheless. I still have my sites that continue to rank pretty well for terms that I target through directory submissions, and I know that for a fact since there’s nothing else that I do for them at the moment. So, I’d definitely say for the money involved it definitely is a worthwhile effort… Having said that, Directory submissions do help in some sort of way, although with the eclipse of time, I’d have to say it’s marginal. But remember, every drop leads to a mighty ocean, and given that they’re one of the simpler ones to do, make the most of it. But remember, while you’re building links to your site, don’t just rely on directory submissions, but do it in combination with other things and you surely would see success

in my opinion submitting to directories has lost its link juice except if its the 3 main ones yahoo.dmoz, business, com which can get expensive, some submit their site and they see it was a waste because the linking page is just to deep in the site to be crawled by the search engines, so as long as the directory is not considered a link farm by google and the page where the link is at has been indexed i think it wont hurt your web site but also wont gain to much from it

I have access to many top of the line SEO tools from various companies as well as have been doing it long enough myself to see what kind of juice I am getting from all of my directory links and I would gladly say I would give up 300 directory links with PR3 and above for 2 PR3 niche in content backlinks.

I can't seem to justify doing directory submissions anymore.

I've had better success with article marketing, social bookmarking, rss submissions, and getting links from authority sites in my selected niches.

Directory submissions won't help you in some competitive niches but it's still a good way to diversify your link profile.
However 6 days is not enough to see backlinks / results. You should wait a couple of weeks or so...

Not dead but the effectiveness has been seriously eroded.

I've gotten some sites all the way up to pr3 with simply doing semi-automatic directory submission
