I have to say that Directory submissions are good as far as getting your site out to pages that link back with relative content. This being said you will not get much page rank if any from directories as they don't generally weight very high. Also those that say they have high PR so "you must post to those first" is not going to help you because generally where your link will show within the directory will have no PR at all. A homepage for a directory can have a PR of 9 but the page full of links that your link is on generally has a PR of 0.

Even with this a backlink is a backlink so ultimately its good but your better off getting backlinks from established sites and within comments on other peoples blogs with your sites subject matter.

 

I would say it is useful but not if you go for over kill and submit your site to every directory you can find.Trust me there are alot of bad site directories out there that can seriously damage your site rankings in some cases sending your site to one bad directory can send your site down a few places.

 

It is very useful and definitely increases the traffic it is the good source of indexing the page and backlinks.
It drives the extra public to your site.
