People vote on stories if they like them. If yours is interesting/relevant it will get noticed and get voted and you'll get traffic. If not, it will be forgotten.

Digg's quite helpful sometimes...just to get your site noticed kinda. You can't get digg users to click adsense or join your mailing list or buy stuff from you that easy..but it's good to get you a lot of traffic...(and bring down your server if you get too much of it) but it still serves a popularity and authority building purpose if you provide GOOD unique info, it can also get you additional backlinks sometimes..IMO

You post a 'story' on digg, which includes a link to an article or page on a website. You give the story a title and a description. People searching for things on digg may find your content, and you can also appear on the newly posted stories.

The more your story is 'dugg' the higher it ranks on the site. For very popular stories, it can appear on the front page, creating a huge snowball effect regarding traffic.

The principle is that only the most popular stories get the most traffic and best ranking.

Yes. Getting people to digg the story based on merit is difficult however.

also a side effect of Digg is the 'digg effect' where your server crashes from too many people :)

I find Digg pretty useful cuz you get to read articles and things that you wouldn't find otherwise

I've found quite the opposite. I've only been dugg once (out of three or four tries), but it resulted in 10,000+ extra visitors that day and a couple hundred bucks in extra AdSense revenue. I'd do it every day if I could. :)
