LoL.. Think of the micro niches that all make money, it's not whether or not it's popular enough it's more whether you can get the traffic in a competitive niche like Cricket.
you need to research keywords to see if they are popular, if it seems to be enough people interested then you may think on starting your website...
Cricket is not a popular or widely played sports in the world. However, several current and former British commonwealth countries do play them. You get people from UK, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, India, Pakistan, Bangdalesh, Sri Lanka, Zimbabwee and some West Indies islands which play them. It is certainly a niche sport with a niche following.
umm....India has a population of about 1130 million - most of whom are mad about cricket. In comparison, the U.S.A has a population of 304 million. I think that means that worldwide cricket is more popular than baseball. That is not a 'micro-niche'.

I would say that since the introduction of the 20/20 cricket it has gone through the rankings, its now watched by millions world wide as opposed to the long drawn out test matches. So yeah, i would say cricket is extremely popular.
You know, more than the fact that cricket is popular now, I would say that the introduction of T20 will make the game popular, or global in the coming time. Personally I would think that a wholesome cricket website today, is an amazing investment for tomorrow - read a couple to three years down the line. Cricket is a very popular sport and the countries involved in the World Cup all love it and can't get enough. Also agree that 20/20 is making it a more exciting sport.
The commonwealth countries are pretty serious about cricket, and the money circulated is pretty huge. Your main markets will be in India, England, Australia, South Africa and some other countries. Cricket tours can cost thousands of dollars (world cups etc) so this is a pretty fair niche. The problem is that Adsense is not brilliant for this, you need to get business by going to travel agencies etc and setting something up outside of the norm.
