As Matt rightly pointed out, search engine crawlers cannot decide the quality of content on its own, it uses parameters which indicate to it that the content is good i.e links. So I personally would go with Matt's view.

For online businesses, 'Content is king/Queen' would hold true since customers are in a position to make that judgment on their own, they don't require indicators. A good content will surely be appreciated by customers and would help your business grow. However, if people don't get to read that content, all your efforts would amount to no output and in most cases would be heart breaking. So marketing it well holds the key. Let me draw an analogy. You build a plush five start hotel in the middle of a desert (you shouldn't be doing it in the first place), miles away from any know human civilization. Although the hotel may be the best, it still won't have occupants as nobody would be aware that it exist. Similarly a good content will fail to mail the desired impact in absence of desired visibility.

I thank you all for your valuable inputs. Hang on the discussion is not over yet. I would like to invite more members to give their valuable suggestions here.

Content is still alive but many sites creating community like content are getting big hits because it allows the users to get involved more.

Content is the stuff (text and graphics) of Web pages. It makes up the details of the page. Content always support your site specially increasing traffic & getting back links.. The case is content should be relative and unique to attract visitors...

No i do not think so that content is still king. Yeah but we can not ignore importance of content.

Now days if any image or picture give us the same information which we need than it is natural that we would not prefer to read long long content pages.

But yeah bu using exact image or picture and very important points in content it will be the great stuff for visitors. Because today no one will prefer to spend lots of time in reading content.

Ex: if any one is searching for luxurious Villas for rental than one site is serving pictures of villas and one is serving lots of content than what will you prefer to visit? of course the site which has pictures of villas.

But only pictures and images are not enough, so content must be there, remember "quality content".

For serps I would also say content is king..

I have a blog that I've done very little SEO work on, mainly because it's for fun than anything else. It doesn't have search engine friendly URL's, nor does it have much in the way of meta-data yet I find it brings traffic from search engines based on the actual content I write on there.

I monitor it's traffic, obviously, and the sources of the traffic, and nearly all of it comes from search engines and rarely is it for any particular targeted keyword or phrase. In fact the most traffic comes from a 'keyword' that I hadn't even considered as an important one. Sure, it's been mentioned in several posts on the blog but only because it was relevant to the article I was writing or whatever.

Search engine spiders read the content and rank you according to what you have written, I think, it certainly seems to be the case for this particular blog of mine.

You wouldn't think I was a guy would you? lol (I am though!)

But yes it is definitely true... You need great content but without quality links the content can be useless (not always) but if you have quality content then you are more likely to receive natural links anyway which will make your content king!

Content is definitely the king which sits on its throne, ie links.

Yes you can say that "On-Page" is not that important as "Off-Page"...

    Thank you

Before I say anything, I would like to thank you all for your valuable comments and inputs. The response is overwhelming. The discussion more or less centered around the adage "Content is King" and I would say we have a consensus. However, people view it from different perspectives and have different applications for it, though the core idea still remains the same.

I decided to compile my ideas with that of yours and wrote a post. All of you are invited to come visit it and share your inputs on what more could have been said or what you think about it.

    Once again, thank you all.

Yeah, it's a really good post submitted by you. I am satisfied with it that content is still a king but adding it, it must be unique and good keywords should be used in an appropriate way. Besides it, Promotion is essential that can add more value to the content.
