Is content still the king???

Up until now I strongly believed that 'Content is still the king', however my faith was a bit shaken when I read a blog post by Jonathan (http://www.copyblogger.com/no-links/) and other similar posts made by him. “It’s not what you know, it’s who you know?” seems to be defining social media marketing these days. Comments would be much appreciated

If you are talking about getting links and content on blogs I think this has always been the case.

Content is still king, for Google.

You will always need content for Google.

The more sticky you make your blog post, I think you will acheive what you are looking for. But I don't believe content will ever fail you.

Some are just better at making their blogs more appealing to the masses.

Content is and will always be the king.
Everything revolves around TRAFFIC and traffic will be good and consistent when there is anything nice to offer to your visitors.
If your websites does not provide any good content than it will not be able to attract the customers.
So my dear friends forget about what is king and what is not, just add nice, informational, rich content which is useful to the visitors then everything else will come automatically.

I think there is a good point here - as far as social networking/social bookmarking goes - all contributors are not equal - getting a 'vote' on stumbleupon or digg (possibly sphinn? - not sure how their system works) from someone who has got lots of followers counts for more - being part of the 'in-club' definately helps.

coming from the adult side of things, i used to say all you need is decent traffic. it's a numbers game. ..but in order to get high quality search engine traffic, you'll need good content so.. yeah.. content is king. content + backlinks that is.

Different person will have different view. Regardless of what others will say, I still think content is everything. Obviously I don't agree with what is being said over there.

I think the article was talking more about blogging and having a popular blog.

But “hanging out with the cool bloggers” won’t get you ranked high in google.

The comments from the distinguished members of the forum seems indicate that 'content is still the king' and would remain for eternity, however a hint of ambiguity is hidden here and there. The blog post sure did have more to do with blogging is general and less about website content, but isn't blogging a crucial element of search engine optimization? I appreciate you all for all your comments and look forward to more.

wow that's a really good post and it is really true...even though content matters a lot, you really need to have good connections to be popular. Most of the times, popular bloggers write shitty stuff with only one or good posts that are really great (except Problogger) but they are still famous because they have so many backlinks and supporters. They know how to market their blogs. here is a post by Bloggernoob on similar topic: Writing good contenting is overrated

I think its important to have connections and build a following, but without 'good' content, you won't be around for the long haul.

It seems to be a popular mantra around here that 'content is king' where people seem to believe that simply writing the complete works of Shakespeare will result in top rankings.

Google has not, does not and will not in the forseeable future make any judgements on the quality of your content using any algorithm.

Google judge the 'quality' of content by the number and quality of the links that point to it. Where the quality of content truly does matter is encouraging people to link to it naturally.

People are correct that the quality of content is important, but you're not even half of the way there.

I agree with what Matt said. How can a bot judge the quality of content. When I always hear that content is king it makes me laugh. They are either a proud writer or have no idea about SEO. You need to promote your content, even if it's good. Quality content just helps with getting more natural links.

Google wants us to believe that content is king. They are doing right thing but as already said, in fact bots do not know anything about quality. That`s the reason way they measure relevancy and links plus some more factors. If site has some age, does not spam, content includes keywords plus has many trusted and relevant links then Google algo thinks you have "quality content".

Content is King, so long as it is unique, but content is no good without links.

Fortunately, as the owner of an informational, nonprofit website, I don't have to worry about ROI, conversions, etc. So please permit me to make an observation from a more "philosophical" perspective.

Ultimately, content is the most important aspect of any website. If content is well-written, relevant, descriptive, and helpful to people, then the website owner has succeeded. He/she has produced a high-quality website that is a genuine asset to internet readers.

Now when the financial aspects enter the picture, that's when things get complicated. Now rankings, traffic, return on investment, on-page and off-page SEO, and a host of other things that ultimately affect the financial bottom line become important.

So, is content indeed "king"? For a nonprofit site, absolutely yes. On a for-profit site, the urgency of having good content is only one of many factors that end up influencing your "bottom line".
