Is Content Really King To Make Money Online

Discussion in 'General Marketing' started by GuruCreation, Aug 3, 2009.

A couple of weeks ago I wrote on my blog about whether or not "Content" was still, really king when it comes to marketing.

I wanted to have a discussion with those that were interested in leaving a comment on my blog about what I wrote. You'll notice that there are 0 comments that were allowed to be posted, because all 14 comments that I received were more spam than anything else.

So, I would like to know what everything thinks about "Content," really being king, but take a look at what I had to say first. :D

Content seems to help, but reputation matters more. A person can make awesome content that goes unnoticed, but if you have a reputation, you can make a turd with a bow on it bring in profit.

Content is the King but if no one comes to your site then it will only be spammers who will be leaving comments. Not only you need to write good content, you need to learn to promote it. So write a version on "why content is king" on your blog and then twist it around and write an article "why everyone should work on their content to make money" and post that article on articles site. This way you drive back visitors to your site which will have more content to offer to people. Overtime content will win but it takes time.

You also need to build your reputation. In other words, you need to improve your authority so that when you say something, people responds. It again will come in time.

All of this will take time.

I've seen some great sites with quality contents written very intelligently that get very few visitors and I've also seen turds on the net that get more views than they deserved. "Content is King" is such a myth, you need to do many things well on the net if you want to be successful and content is only one of the requirements.

content is good but at the end of the day traffic matter but that doesn't mean don't offer good content but focus more on quality traffic.

harrysidhu is right. Traffic is king, targetted traffic for that matter. Having good content helps get you traffic.

i think content is king but a different type of content is king is now bubbling up. Scraping content will become easier as feed Api scrape not only text, but photo and video and allow them to be injected into a website without being encapsulated around the original author or website. The continued ability to comment on such content, rate it, forward it, and be notified when others comment on your comments will overtake "content" as the new content of choice..Sites like the nytimes and yelp have this down to a science at this point (exception being they do not scrape content of course). This site for example is an old forum play but with comment notify, you come back-you revisit. Avatar ranking and the ability to rank comments is what drives people to sites. People are very narcissistic these days and are hypersensitive about projecting "how I feel" "what I think" "me" on anything they are allowed to remark on. People comment on things they have zero knowledge on-but they do so because they can. And it drives them back time and time again, esp. when you add in fictional "value" in the form of stars and rankings.. Social media online and content at times mimics how 12-15 year thinks about the world around them. That being an absolute obsession with how others perceive them and the fear of missing in on something. Only its not just the 12-15 year old. From an ethnocentric view of America its generally everybody.

You cannot get traffic if you do not have content. Its like saying the car is important but the tires are not.

One other thing about the content debate.
The end user is not so bright sad to say. Time and time again I hear clients talk about wanting to replicate websites that appear hyperlocal. Yet when I investigate them they are run by mega media companies with billions in budgets, yet the content and sight is designed to appear hyperlocal and the public eats it up..I cannot tell you how many times I've listened to clients want replicate a stupid mommy blog only for me to tell them that its run by a mega media company and not some local.

""Having good content helps get you traffic""

Content how? is like Joe Pesci's "Funny How...My "content" would be run through googles Insight For Search, every character, and before that I run it past Google Trends.

I have seen plenty of shit sites, and they have had a lot of traffic.

I have seen plenty of nice-looking sites with plenty of content, but very little traffic.

I think the bottom line is, advertising/marketing is king. Only because there are so many God-awful sites out there, yet they still make the money.

But, wait, since it takes money to make money, isn't money king???

    "Content" is highly overrated.

The goal of make website is for profit, and the content to get traffic, and the traffic is for selling service or products, the selling is for the money!

In your blog post, you make the point that Twitter/Facebook posters are rolling out complete trash. Let's get one thing straight - these people are not "marketing" the fact that they are going to the toilet. We are marketing our websites and our businesses; there's a distinct difference.

If content isn't King then what are people looking for when they search something at Google? Abstract imagery?

    - There are instances where content isn't necessarily 'King' but is still important. Consider for example, Expedia. The reason people go to Expedia is to use it's Function but through that they can get to city-guides etc.

A blend of content and function can lead to a top quality site; even blends of content. No-one likes to read endless passages of text. Mix it up - bullets, small paragraphs, little sidebar boxes etc. Incorporate video, graphics and interactive flash where appropriote.

There's so much to 'Content' - beyond the text and beyond the Twit(terer..) saying they're in the middle of eating dinner..

Marketing is definitely king, but without content it can only take you so far. I, too, have seen many awesome sites that provide great content whose traffic is minimal.

It's kind of like an awesome band who lacks a business sense. They can be the best musicians on the planet, but if nobody hears them, what does it matter?
