.com is definitely preferred and has a lot of advantages, but not for SEO

You don't see many .infos ranking first, because people that know what they are doing use .coms

The domain extension doesn't matter at all but the domain name having your keywords does matter. But it would be much better to register a .com domain because if your site becomes popular sooner or later then many of the people who are not aware of the domain extension will go to .com domain.

A search engine crawls websites for quality and relevant information, the domain TLD does not have no factor at all in the SEO world. People who say it does are either misunderstanding something, or they have misunderstood a myth.

.edu websites often have a high link value simply because .edu and .gov websites are generally run by schools, collegese, unversities and government organizations, therefore Google understands that most information is going to be unique and relevant. I don't think anyone can just go ahead and register a .edu/.gov, I think you have to be registered and accepted first. Hence making it harder for unrelevant and scrap content to creep onto the websites.

The only misunderstood factor that people get mixed up is the fact SEO is all Search Engine based. The main reason why .com websites get more traffic is because people use this as a default to searching the web.

For example, imagine Google is new, and your friend says, 'Hey, when you get home, check out Google's new search engine.' If you was unsure, what TLD would you enter first? .com I pressume. But this is because people assume it is some sort of default.

.info/.org/.fs.sg.asdawe.dsadasdasd...... it doesn't matter, search engines simply crawl websites for quality information, period.
