Maybe the government knew but the Greek pride blinded most people from realizing that they are in real trouble and that they need to act .

How anyone could NOT know, boggles the mind at this point. Whether the public knew or not is one thing. The fact that all of Europe knew, and still knows makes me wonder why they continue to deny that reality.

The Greek crisis began when they've spent far to much money for the 2004 Olympics . After that thing where bad but thanks to a stable global economy they weren't sinking . They could hold on to their life style and still now crash , but the 08-09 crisis simply eviscerated them , after that they just never managed to stabilize their economy .

With respect, I believe it goes back way further than that.. I think they spent that money in the hopes that the influx of tourism and new use facilities would bolster an already failing system of economic instability.

What got Greece into trouble is the same failed philosophy that has many other European nations in trouble and on the verge of collapse. It's this idea that you can work for 20 years, retire at 50 and continue to receive a wage even though you are no longer paying into the system. The problem with that is eventually you run out of other peoples money....

Socialism just does not work. I've heard people in Europe talk for decades about how they get 3 months vacation, free health care and a pension from the government. I've always wondered how that is sustainable when you end up reaping more benefits than you have contributed into that system. Now we all know.

Olympics or no, the "lifestyle" that Greece and other European nations are trying to maintain is simply unsustainable. Ponzi schemes work for a while too... There's not much difference in either.

Mia you're forgetting that there is a very big difference in taxes between Europe and the US . Even simple thing like gas have twice the amount of taxes you guys have. Europe can afford a lot of things because our system was well organized , however more recently idiots have been trying to apply the US model forgetting that we're in a different context . That has caused most of Europe's financial crisis .

But most Europeans do not drive as far as the average American. Hell in the UK you can drive from one end of the country to the other in one day.
The fuel costs are relative. I think Europe affords things because the system of taxation is penal enough to compensate for the shortage of contributors to wealth redistribution vs. the number of those consuming. Europe has been doing it longer than the US, which is why they are only now finding out why that model does NOT work.

The problem with the US model is, we do not force our tax base to pay as much or at as high a rate as you all do.

The better model would be to eliminate the wealth redistribution model entirely. Creating a new currency obviously did not solve the problems Europe has any more than printing more currency does in the US.

True , their are problems with our system but... i'm to sleepy to talk about them now . Anyway our system can work but it requires some extreme maintenance . The Europe of today i a far cry from the Europe of the '80 (when this systems where last revied) . Today Europe is waking up from the multiculturalism nightmare and the consumerism stupidity . The only questions is : will we awake fast enough to avoid extinction ? The European economic model will work but only if the European society will be one driven by Europeans not by immigrants . Unlike the US we're unused with this concept and we don't have enough resources to accommodate further population and cultures . We have enough of our own differences and rivalries , we don't need to import more .

Europe needs some strong laws in place in the next 10 years or we will start going downhill fast . The system isn't faulty but the implementation is .

I agree, any Ponzi system can work well for a while. And many can be perpetuated for years.. Look at Mary K (US thing). Like any Pyramid, the larger it gets the more it takes to support the ones at the top, middle, etc... Eventually you just run out of people at the bottom.

Zombies and robots. That's all that will be left with a few intellectuals that will have to repopulate the world. People believe everything they are fed by the media and also are becoming more morally bankrupt.
