Is Changing Domain Name Will Effect Search Engine Ranking

I wondering if changing current domain name will effect google and other search engine ranking. I wish to change my current .blogspot.com domain into simpler and more easy-to-remember URL such as myname.com. However the .blogspot.com URL itself already established in search engine and even beat giant websites and rank high first page for high-search terms. So it is OK for me to change the domain name as I am worry if after the change my blog's ranking will dropped. Thanks in advance for your help. :)

    Hello Friend,
As per my experience and knowledge, if you will change your domain name as .blogspot.com to xyz.com that may effect your search engine ranking because after changing domain name keep value not the .blogspot.com

no doubt your site will go down for a while (unknown while) maybe if you place a big link on the first page anouncing your visitors that you changed your address and to follow you there will help.

    cheers !

    Hi all,
Changing you domain name will surely loose the ranking as it may not be difficult for users to get to it. It is only applicable if you can have a good database and loyal visitor for your blog.

Carrying out some marketing strategies would help you in near future.

If you can communicate better with your visitor it would be useful.
You can also advertise like you are changing the domain name form so-&-so dat and do find your favorite blog there.

I don't use Blogspot, but if they'll let you do a 301 redirect, you should be fine. If not, contact the owners of the sites that linked to your blog and ask them to update their links.

First off, how will you change the blogspot domain to a .com domain? If you'll pull the material off somehow then go with wordpress or something with your own hosting, then yes, it will affect it negatively. Otherwise, if it's just redirection, I don't think this will cause trouble since search engines can still index the blogspot domain while you use other domains to redirect to it.

You can do a 301 redirect multiple ways, including the code of the home page. If, at a minimum you do a 301 redirect from the home page of the old site to the home page of the new site you'll save a lot of your SEO juice. You should also look into your analytics for the most visited pages and do a redirect from them to an appropriate page of the new site also. This may catch 80% of your main pages, which is better than just leaving them dangling out here all alone with nobody to visit them...

You are screwed... This is the problem w/ having a sub-domain on free web hosts or free blog hosts like blogspot.com or wordpress.com. If your web site or blog takes off, becomes popular... and you EVER want to move it then you can kiss your inbound links to the old free site good-bye. There is a reason it's free people...

Free hosts typically never provide you a way to 301 redirect requests for the old URLs to your new myname.com URLs. They basically hold you captive and force you to decide whether to 1) stay with them and deal with the inflexibilities or shortcomings of free hosting or 2) leave them and start over completely from scratch from an SEO perspective.

My advice to everyone is that if you have even the most remote thought that your site/blog might one day be important to you from a personal or business perspective and/or make you any type of money then NEVER use free hosting. $6-8/month for a GoDaddy account is dirt cheap and you have almost infinite possibilities of what you can do with the site.

If you find yourself stuck in such a situation and decide to move anyway then I'd suggest you keep the old site up and running and try to find a way to 1) implement some type of meta refresh (which won't transfer credit for your old site's inbound links but could at least forward your traffic to the new site) or 2) use the old site to link to the new site.

There IS one way. Delete all the content on the old blog (not the pages, just the contents of the pages), drop a link to the new location on the existing (soon to be dead) pages, and then ask the site owners to update their links so they point to the right location.

Once they've done that, then formally nuke the blog with a 10 megaton blast.

Of course it will effect google and other search engine ranking. But if you can do it as following , it will be the best way for you to keep the original rank of your site.
To relocate of the site, please follow these steps:
1, First of all, test the contents of the migration process of the entire site by moving a directory or sub domain. Then use the 301 redirect feature to redirect the original site to your new website. This method can be adopted by this search engine: your site has been permanently relocated.

2,Check whether your new site's pages can appear in the search engine's search results or not. If you are satisfied on the small-scale migration, you can migrate the entire site. Please do not redirect all the traffic of the old site pages to your new home page. Although this across-the-board redirection will avoid a 404 error, it can not provide a good user experience. Although the page redirected to the page (each page of the old site are redirected to the new site on the corresponding page) will bring about a greater workload, but will also give you a more consistent user experience and clarity . If the old and the new website pages rather than one-on-one match, we must strive to ensure that each of the old site to redirect at least a page with similar content to the new page.

3, If the site requires to change the domain name due to the re-naming or re-design, it can be divided into two phases: the first stage, move your web site; the second phase, started to re-design. To do so, not only to control the user experience at every stage of the change in magnitude, but also the entire process more smoothly. Change control to a minimum allows you to more easily identify and solve a variety of unforeseen circumstances.
4, check your site's internal and external links. Ideally you should contact each administrator of other sites which are linked to your site, so that they can link them to the corresponding page under your new domain name. You should also check and update all the old site's internal links, so that they point to the new domain name. When you have the site ready for the new server, you can use a link checking tool to verify whether your new site links the legacy of failure or not. This is particularly important, if your original content included absolute links rather than relative links words.

5, in order to prevent confusion and chaos, you’d better continue to hold authority control of the domain name to the original website at least 180 days.

6, Add your new web site to the Webmaster Tools account and verify your ownership of the site. Create and submit a sitemap to show all the new web site URL, so that search engines will know your new site’s content is now available to crawl.

7,Finally, ensure that your new and old sites in the webmaster tools are verified, and check crawl errors regularly to ensure that the 301 redirect from the old site is working, at the same time the new site will not show the 404 error that we do not want to see.

Blog spot allow you to redirect the URL, so if you do move your blog, just make sure you do the redirect properly. Google will continue to send traffic and will eventually reindex the pages on your new site.

But in the end you'll be fine.
