Is buying sitewide links so bad?

It seems that every SEO book and every SEO professional stresses to add links in low increments, in particular daily increments of only a few. Then when discussing time frames to achieve first page of Big G, it usally is 3-6 months. However, I have seen sites reach the first page of google for really competitive search terms within a month using sitewide links from large high PR sites. And these rankings have survived at least several months since I have observed them.

So my question is, is it really that bad to buy sitewide links? It seems you can get instant rankings, and save yourself plenty in time and SEO expenses.
