there are legitimate reasons to keep it private. Maybe if members find out then they will spread to other members on the forum and they will lose respect for the forum, because they don't want a new owner or they think the current owner was only in it for money. But just be safe try to do as much communication on the board taht way if something goes wrong you have written proof that can be used, for pm's may be suspected of being edited. Also pick payment type, use paypal all the time or some other form of payment where if something goes wrong, you know they will help out.

iTrader and reputation are there for you to use and both work if used. DP is not going to intervene nor dedicate a mod to babysitting the BST forums.

people sometimes hide theyre URl cause they dont want people to know they own the site. or if its a forum , they dont want theyre members finding out of a possible sale til the end.

if you dont like how its sold. dont buy it. i personally show every detail of all my sites. i think your making a big deal about nothing. itrader is there for a reason.

would you really buy a site for 2k from some one with 0 - 2 itrader with out going all out in details? maybe look into escrow? i think not.

plus have you bought or sold anything for you to judge the way we do things here?

No, just noticed it the free for all site selling thing doesn't work very good for some n00b like me.
I can understand the forum hiding url. That makes sense.

I just wished there was a little bit more security of buying and selling here because of my situation.

The 90% of you are alright with a bad deal because you got som much going on it's win some lose some for you. Me. I'm an official nothing working like a peasent for close to nothing.
Getting a bad deal with cost me.

I don't want to work at this crappy job for nothing for the rest of my life and you all are telling me that you agree that people are seen ripping off, and you won't stop it.

    This should be like ebay

You haven't bought anything, but noticed that the current system doesn't work well for you?

And you'd like the forum owners to change the system to suite you because of your current employment or financial situation? I think you're smart enough to conduct business here without getting burned.

If you're uncomfortable with participating in some of the deals/auctions/sales don't.

And from what I've seen at eBay, you'll more likely to get a crappy deal or ripped there.

There's just too much to help. I'm in no condition to make any moves into something big enough to really go for. The problem is I'm getting a little tired of my work life.

I guess I'm just trying to vent a little because when I do look I see one heck of a lot of manipulation when people are selling sites. That's not good, because I'm not supposed to see this because I'm a learner here. I can't imagine what I don't see that I should know. Chances are I'll get ripped off a bunch of times.

General rule of thumb, if you don't feel good about the deal, don't do it. You have to consider, you aren't doing six, seven and eight figure deals here. I have done a lot of deals, buying and selling and while I am fortunate that about 98% of them are legit, occasionally you get the few bad apples. Fact of working on a forum, you have to consider your audience.

ok so let me get this right,

    1) you don't have the money or plan to buy anything on here.

    2) your just talking about how you don't like the way its done but haven't bought anything or have been scammed.

so why is this thread here again? please don't knock it till you tried it. simple.

Never done a deal before? Well, that's a big difference. Ultimately, expect that some deals aren't going to work out. Doesn't mean the world is bad, just a fact of life.

I'm sure there are some bad deals made here.. I've never given or had one but..

like the old saying goes. " if it's to good to be true, it is"

Don't jump into sales, if it doesn't feel right.. just pass on it ;)

    cheers

Well, bad deals are a fact of life. if you haven't had one, you will. It's unfortunate but true.

The only frustration I would say I have is when a person is a confirmed scammer, their negative itrader still stands but I guess once you close hundreds of confirmed deals, the bad side of that goes away :)

I do have cash, without a good plan, and haven't really bought anything enough to get ripped off yet.

I guess you all are right. Watch closely, use whatever research skills you have before sigining into a deal.
    Learn from mistakes.

    Makes sense to me.

Sorry for the little debate. Just frustrated.

No apologies - discussions such as this are a learning experience for me and I get to see differing points of view and new ideas. ;)

Just exercise some caution, if you're uncomfortable with an auction/sale, trust your instincts. I understand and often wonder if "private bids" are actually legit or not and tend to avoid such auctions. ;)

Frustrated over seeing others get defraud?

Close 200+ deals and then get back to us :)

    Best of luck.

What everyone has wrote here is right - do your homework, keep an eye on feedback/rep and use common sense.

Also as far as 'PM me for URL' goes, this is something completely understandable, whether its someone not wanting the spiders to pick up the address, or even people with community sites not wanting their own members to idley stumbled across. Just because someone doesn't lay absolutely everything out in a public access forum post does not been they have bad intentions.

Where 'PM for proof of stats etc go' - again, this could very well be a privacy issue; but, in my opinion, is also a good 'salesman' tactic. Its a hook, plain and simple, if someone PM's you requesting more information on a sale, then right there you have a 'lead'; someone you can talk to on a one-to-one basis in the hopes of making a sale. Is this a bad tactic? Absolutely not - you see this in everyday sales - put something out there to initiate a contact, generate leads, and focus on those leads in order to pursue a sale.

That being said, as far as I recall i've never withheld info in order to generate leads because I simply don't have time to deal with a flood of PMs.

Lastly, just because a sales thread makes mention of PM bids or sales doesn't mean it should be avoided. If I remember rightly, most of the sales i've made here and on other forums have been conducted via PM; usually after an interested party contacts me with other questions about the site.

What about those same "salesman" selling a site, then saying in that topic.

Got a bid of $800 from PM.

{got a bad rep for this topic and his reason was "dirrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr"
    lol, I guess I need not worry about anyone who listens to that guy.}

Well, most would agree that when you close enough deals, a lot of backend stuff is done. People asking questions by IM, making bids by PM, closing deals over PM. There is just too much that happens via PM. I myself try to avoid it and even post that they should ask questions in a thread but ultimately if someone wants to make an offer by PM, you can't really say no. Ultimately, it comes down to trust, and if you don't trust the person, then you shouldn't do a deal with them.
