Is Buying An Existing Domain Name A Good or Bad Idea?

Discussion in 'Search Engine Optimization' started by lyndatreb, Jan 16, 2010.

I'm starting a new Wordpress blog and it was recommended to me, for SEO purposes, to buy an existing domain name rather than registering a new domain.

I'm just a little nervous about doing this because I would hate to start using a domain that has maybe had some problems in the past, maybe been banned for using black-hat techniques or something. Is there any way to check the history of a domain to know whether it has a clean history in that regard?

    Thanks

An existing domain may help you with visitors if you are going to create exaclty with similar niche which was there already. If you are going to put something different, you may lose the existing visitor base gradually. And if the domain had been non working for a while, there is a chance that the directories or any other sort of backlink providers where delete their links to the domain. So, gradually you may lose your PR too.

However, you may get a push at first compared to a new domain which takes time for you to cultivate good links and also build up a visitor base.

I always prefer going for a New domain. :)

    Thanks,

Type "link:yourdomain.com" on google to see how many backlinks the site already have.
    It might help your decision.

it could be a good decision or a bd one and sometimes you would not even know. lot of times people will not renew a site if it gets banned by google. if you end up buying such domain, then you are screwed. domain age is a factor but only way you will see some good benefit is that if the domain has a lot of backlinks already. if it is just an old domain with no backlinks, the just the age doesn't matter much

    I disagree ..
But to make a point, I want you to answer this question:
How do you define "domain age" ?
