Is blogging a passing fad or is it here to stay?

Can blogs rival websites for popularity generally. I think with the exception of few very popular blogs, sites are generally more popular. I guess they do provide differnt purposes. One thing I hope that does not happen is more convergance, some blogs are becoming more like sites. I think that defeats the purpose of blogging. I guess they do it to make them more profitable.

Since splogs appeared and now blogs are taking the shape of regular sites, there needs to be a blog revolution. I think blogs are here to stay though.

Blogs will always be here, the average joe isn't going to learn php / html to build their own sites by hand. As the internet reaches more and more people, there will be more blogs.

podcasting will soon pass up blogging, I'm sure. blogging will still happen, don't get me wrong, but podcasting will become much more popular.

I think blogging is here to stay, especially with the popularity of Myspace. Today's kids are learning to make homepages and blogs at a very early age. And now it's not just the computer geeks who are doing it.

The social bookmarking sites are also making blogs more popular as a source of information for users. I've started to find myself leaving Google to search Technorati for recent topics because the results are usually more current.

What would replace blogs? I don't think podcasting or videocasting will be able to fill that void.

I don't see it that way myself.
Podcasting doesn't allow me to skim at my own speed through words and the likes. The written word is much more user friendly.

    podcasting is moreso the fad.

blogs are on the rapid increase constantly & have been growing exponentially.

What will stop them? Nothing in the near future......thanks to Bill.

Yes blogs have not even taken off if we look at what is about to happen....
When Bill Gates releases vista's new Internet Explorer (which his forward tracked to be released before vista for this very feature...) there will be a Add To Blog Favourite button kind of like the Add to favourite. It will automatically find the rss feed on the site, and deliver it to your desktop! It's going to be huge, so if you don't have a blog yet.....get to it!

podcasting: snob slang for posting an MP3 on the internet

"podcasting" won't take off until you can actually broadcast to an MP3 player. I don't consider having to go to a web-site, download a file and then upload it to a device "casting." Until you can get your audio directly to the iPod you're not podcasting.

Until cellphones can do streaming audio and providers charge a small flat rate for net access, web casting won't be very big.

A blog is just a database driven on-line journal. Back in 1996 when the internet started everyone was throwing up stupid homepages whining about how their life sucked.

In otherwords, "blogs" are just a easier to update version of what everyone has been doing since the internet began.

So no, on-line journals aren't going anywhere. They will just be created in different ways. Like all things the first people actually have talent and create their own sites and then eventually tools are created so everyone can be cool doing what the dorks have been doing forever. Because only nerds write HTML.

Blogs are just a simplified CMS which have been around for years. Anything that brings web publishing to the masses is going to be popular.

thank god someone said it before I had to.

That and podcasting takes away some of the mystery of the written word..

if I'm talking trash on my boss I don't want someone to recognize my voice. Typed words? Perfect.

Oh yea. My boss is a nutcase. That'll come back to bite me, I know it..Haha.

I've thought a lot about this topic recently.

A blog is a great way to quickly build content for search engines and sites like technorati. But what about building an honest-to-goodness content-oriented web site? The blog content is then better added to the site.

I'm spec'ing out my next web site for "passive" income. I've got my keyword list and I'm checking out the competition. I want the site to be a great resource for visitors. I DON'T see a blog as integral to the site. The only way I see a blog fitting is IF 1.) the content of the site is strictly impersonal and 2.) the blog is strictly personal. For example, the site would be "how to" and the blog would be "my personal experience" and written in 1st person.

Blogs as pure blog sites, or even parts of a site, will be around a long time. The question is how will they best be used and in four years, will blogs be viewed "helpful information" or "some dude's diary."
