if you have added value to the discussion then i feel it is ok and if your link has anchor text which says wow gold then fine, imho the blog owner should approve your comment as you have added value to the discussion. if you have not added value to the discussion then the blog owner should delete your comment..... and it is simply spam

technically if the blog is not about gold then it is grey hat, however look at forums where many people have sigs not related to topics in the forum thread, is this also black hat.....i do not think so

black hat is when you pay 100 people in china to comment on your blog

If you are really contributing to the discussion and providing good comment than putting your link is not unethical. It your comments are getting approved then it means the webmasters of that blog is providing you backlink with their own will.

Blackhat or not, if you moderate the comments, you decide if you want to reward the comments with a backlink or not right?

Well... Google has slapped the widgetspam guys... so I suspect that might do so for blog commenting if it really worked well.

I wouldn't consider it black or grey hat unless it is 1.) spam 2.) blatantly obvious keywords that make no sense 3.) no contribution to the conversation 4.) trying to squeeze two links out of a sites generosity.

I have no problem if people leave constructive comments on my site but I look at the keywords in the 'name' field and if they are unrelated to my site or way the hell out there it is a wasted effort on their part.

each moderator has the choice to approve or not approve comments,

if the person making the comment has added value then they should get their comment approved. the comment they leave may be very helpful to another reader and you are not going to approve it just because they use kw's which are not related to your blog... well your choice, personally i always appove comments if they have added value

The problem with letting people put dofollow links on your blog is that you will likely trigger Google's link buying algorithms and your page will get Googlesmacked.

Often people's names will link to some pretty unrelated sites.

I think it is BH if the comment doesn't make any sense. If it is very much related to the post and contribute to the discussion of fellow commenters, I think it is just appropriate. and what would be more appropriate would be to include your name and not just keywords.

I agree with the others that say as long as the comment is appropriate, you're fine. You're a person and have a right to comment about a topic. You're visiting that site and helping another with a genuine comment, you should be able to put your link.

I spose its considered 'cheap' but not blackhat, in the end its up the the blogmaster to approve your comment or deny it. So its not all bad.

this method about spamming peoples blogs with foolish comments and backlinks is really not more than spam

If I see a nice helpful comment coming to my blog I will approve it definitely

so you see, even this kind of link building requires you some time to put in

IMO it's not the best method

As long as you are posting quality content, it will help you as well as the site owner.

There is nothing wrong for you to response with quality comment, it's a Win-Win situation for you and the site owner.
