The title of the thread says it all. Are we (as webmasters/SEO's) wasting valuable time in blog commenting for backlinks? Would our time not be much better used in other pursuits such as article writing and submissions in relation to trying to gain backlinks?

Its one of the best ways to gain a backlink. With WP comment links being nofollow by default, its gets really difficult to find blogs with their comment links as dofollow. Article submissions is infact a more tideous way to gain a backlink. Considering the Web getting more and more strict with spam, finding a good place to place your link is a real difficult task.
The problem with commenting on blogs is that if you are not careful about which blogs to comment on, you can end up with a pretty unhealthy link profile. With blog commenting, you can't control which other links will appear on the same page, so to safeguard yourself from being on the same page as pills, porn and gambling you should only comment on heavily moderated blogs.
I think blog commenting is valuable if you make an intelligent comment about the blog post. Active blogs are exactly the kind of thing that search engines like. I think they'll eventually figure out a way to determine whether content is high quality regardless of whether the link is dofollow or nofollow.
Well i don't think its a waste of time , it is the easiest way to get backlinks , article submission is quite difficult than blog comments infact though more rewarding too. But still it is quite useful.
Don't count on the quality of the links when commenting even if it is do-follow. Worry more about writing great comments that can get noticed. This will help you network, and perhaps get a real link to your site.

No, blog comment has not obselete，in my opinion,it is a good way to get backlinks.But you could not spam on others blog,you should post comments on the related blog.

Blog comments still worthy but not as it used to be, most of blogs has nofollow attribute in external links thus no help in PR.
Blog commenting has never been an seo method, if you have been doing it for that then you have misunderstood what blog commenting is for. Hence you will be disappointed. Im shocked, lol
