Is asking your readers for link exchanges a good thing?

    Ok noobie quesiton here,
Getting inbound links to your site is generally thought to be good for google ranking. I've just set up a blog for a person, who already has a large readership of people who own websites through her email newsletter.
I'm asking her readers to link to her blog if they find the blog useful. In return she will link to them.
I assume this is a good strategy. Are there any downsides to this?

Actually I'm against link exchanges cause Google seems not to like them lately. That's why i would recommend going for natural links, driven by that quality content you need on you blog ;)

It's not so much that Google doesn't like them, it's that they don't weigh as much as a one way link. But, that all goes back to the extensive alogorithm that is Google.
