I just received an abuse email from hostgator. Does anyone else hosting web directory on a share server of hostgator received same email?
My hosting was disabled for excessively raising the load, and they ask me to upgrade to Semi Dedicated plan. But I don't know it is the problem of directory or not.
A directory is not memory or cpu consuming is it ? Why do they not want you there? what was your problem in the forst place?
Which hosting account are you using? I've had the swamp for many sites that get plenty of traffic and have had no problems.
I am using Baby Plan, and it was working for 18 months. I really do not know what's the problem, maybe the script, bots or something else. But they just tell me it is raising the load this high and ask me to upgrade. I only have a web directory and some little traffic sites on the server.
Right now i am on the "swamp" package till i decide to go with a server but had no issues with host gator. (I have 2 sites hosted with them and a lot of personal images uploaded) The server had an attack once but got fixed shortly there-after but had nothing to do with my sites. Host gator should of sent you a little more detailed letter then what you just showed us. Something just isn't right.
Me and AnOn had same story with HostGator. Don't know about AnOn, but in my case I did several things to optimize phpld script, made additional exclusion for robots, denied more suspected IPs. All of it I described to HG stuff and after some hours had my website back. Up today it's all OK. Additionally one of HG stuff members was very kind to me offering his help on PM. Antionio as we know each other - (not so many left here I do not know ) - please don't ask me to optimize your dir. You may ask phplinkdirectory stuff as they can help you even more than me with it. I did it myself as I use a lot of custom code and know so well all about it. Whatever - my advice is: optimize, optimize database, restrict robots, deny IPs if you find some suspected. Then write to HG as much as you can that you did all to avoid such situation in the future. (check your logs necesserily as popular directories are often DOS attacked) Thanks. BTW. Always can change host - sometimes it's faster.
Thanks for the advice, I have seen many hits from a same c-class ips and one got 5000 hits in this month. All the traffic from bots seems normal. I would contact them to deal with the problem. BTW, is the anyone good host or VPS for web directory recommended?
For VPS you can check this: http://www.knownhost.com/ Preety cheap and I heard good rumours about them (helpful) Always can try... BTW. I have many websites and many accounts with HostGator. And problem is only with directories (due to DOS attacks in my opinion) I have other websites with almost 500.000 page views monthly and never had problem with them for over 2 years on HG.
You are mistaken dude totally !!! I run server too, and it loads the freaking mail server to oblivion, if you got lots of submissions and notifications going on , so if i notice some directory site on my server , i usually monitor the emails or put a limit to emails to be sent per hour, if i notice some directory having issues, i email the user telling them to disable or do something about their emails. For example i asked Harmony (dp memory) to take measure for one of his/her site as it was getting abused and spammers were using their refer a friend contact form to spam others etc. But asking to take site to other location is absurd, give them options to correct their problems first , if not than tell them you cannot host them. Thats the rule i follow, but how hostgator works is upto them, and with the recent overselling practise they using, i am sure it will soon be just another dreamhost. Thanks to hostgator and other hosting services i was able to put this line on my hosting site : A1 Web Hosting Solutions, fails to provide following services: "Scary Alligators that eat up competition by overselling" there are more punch lines there. Note: For a directory if you go with VPS, you are making more losses than profits. So try some other shared hosting first. If you cannot find any, contact me will set u up to try out for few days. Cheers
I have many directories and i hosted all my directories with hostgator. But, I did not get any problem.
They took my free directory down a few days ago due to the amount of active connections to the site, its getting around 300 submissions daily,I had to convert it into a paid directory...they removed the suspension then and said they'd monitor for further issues... Currently all my dirs are on hostgator, will get a VPS soon...I'd do it earlier but moving sites is a pain! Looks like www.knownhost.com is GOOD and recommended by everyone...
I have three accounts with hostgator and host several directories with them. I occasionally get my sites suspended when spammers try to flood the directories with casino and porn links. Hostgator has excellent customer support. They're very reasonable. You can always deal with them when a problem arises...this is what I like about them.
I have three? directories with Hostgator (using SEOHosting.com) and some of them receive over 200 submissions per day and I have yet to have any problems. The problems I have had in the past were quickly resolved with the help of the support staff.
