Is anybody else getting slammed by Twitter?

Suddenly, over the last two days, I've been getting slammed with Twitter followers. I'm guessing it's a bot or something, but...does anyone else know what's going on?

In 2 days, I've received over 400 new followers... every few minutes my email box is fille up with at least 10-15 new follow notifications...

Do YOU think 400 new followers is customary, all at once???

I've noticed the same on Twitter -- lots more marketers following me than regular folks. For one of my Twitter accounts it is marketers I'm actually wanting to connect with, so that one works out nicely. But I have a personal account that gets hit hard by the marketers. When looking for people to follow, I focus more on quality than on quantity. So far I've figured it isn't really hurting anything to let the marketers follow me but I block them if they do incessant spam tweets. Many marketers are using bots to find new follows and they use automated software to post their messages. Used properly that can probably be very effective, but I see so many of them just being spammy and annoying.

Have you used any sort of referral program? Has someone else used your twitter account to do that?
