Saw this statement today: "ANY link from a website is ALWAYS better than getting no link at all... as long as the website you're linking with, isn't penalized. Accept links with any non-penalized website, no matter what." Would you agree with that? Do you build a huge directory of mostly non-targeted low PR links? Or are you at least a little selective?? I've been selective in the past, but maybe that's not the way to go. What do you do?
I agree with that. It may not always count for Google, and it may not always count as much as another link, but it will always help you in some way. Even if it doesn't do a bit of good with Google (not many people really know about every site), but chances are good it will at least help with MSN, Yahoo, etc.
I allow anyone (as in any directory) to link to me but I only reciprocate with sites in my same theme. I figure you can't control who links to you anyway so why would google care but who you link to says alot about who you are as a company.
if you objective for link building is to raise PR, then you should stick to Quality theme based sites for securing links. Otherwise you can go for high PR links.
SEOEX, I don't understand what your saying hre, as it seems to be reading backwards. If your objective for link building is to raise PR, then ANY inbound link will help you do this (assuming it has some PR value , ie is not penalised or filtered or a non pr coded link). PR is a pure mathematical calculation that has absolutely nothing to do with content. If you intention is to build your reputation in the eyes of the ranking algo as an authority on a specialist subject, then you should link in and out to on topic themes sites, but link to and from the most suited pages.
Link relevence is the key if you want to gain high PR. Non-theme based links are NOT taken into account for these are off theme. build your reputation=high PR... for that "link in and out to on topic themes sites" So here as well relevency is the key...
Relevance has nothing to do with PR. Why would any one want to do link building to increase PR unless you are selling links? Do link building to increase your rankings.
I have to agree with what scott.symbiotic.com I tend to allow anyone to link to me! The link can't make a harm! But I choose carefully who I link to
As scott.symbiotic.com also pointed out, it's not a question of "allowing" people to link to you -- you cannot STOP someone from linking to you. The only thing you have any control over is who YOU link to.
Wrong Again. I repeat PAGE RANK IS A MATHEMATICAL CALCULATION . Content of pages has NOTHING to do with it. This is from the Google website. http://www.google.com/technology/ Read the above, but the meat on the bone Is what I highlighted in bold, Page rank is Maths pure and simple it is about the value of a value this is what google are referring to as the 'importance' of a page. Understand where I am coming from here, I am NOT saying that links from themed sites don't help more for where your site ranks in the SERP's I am referring to the statement you made that content is related to Page rank because it isn't! When you choose a nickname like SEO expert, you sort of set yourself up for examination
I try to be selective. It seems the search engines give more credibility to sites that have similar sites linking to them. In fact every seo book I've read says its better to get related links. Then again I don't know. Some people have success the other way around.
It's all a question of how you define "success". Far too many new webmasters and SEO snake oil salesmen aim for the quick buck with no thought at all to the long term. Techniques that may get you to Google's page 1 or page 2 aren't necessarily the same techniques that will keep you there, or attract visitors to your site that will remain long enough to actually purchase something.
I have a question concerning what exactly is relevant... Take my site for example. I sell cheap sunglasses. I ask you what sites are relevant? I bet no ones answer will be the same. If we can't figure it out, how can a computer? I am going for quantity with PR1+. If it is related, GOD BLESS. If not, I try hard to put your link in a logical spot in my directory. That way at least like topics are on the same page. If anyone has any ideas what relevant links to my site are PLEASE post them. That way we can argue about it. Thanks
The answer to that question is a little like the answer to the question, "What is spam?". You may have difficulty arriving at consensus in wording a definition but most of us wouldn't have a lot of trouble recognizing it when we saw it. As to "how can a computer do it?", if you doubt Google's ability to determine relevance, look more closely at how accurately the AdSense spider can determine what is relevant to your page and what is not.
Getting any link is definitely better than no links at all. You can't always pick and choose your links.
I am by no means an expert, but I will not link any site with severely objectionable content such as porn, etc
I assume you are talking about linking out here, in which case you are 100% right, you have to be very carefull who you link to. The original poster was talking about inbound links however.
