Is alterting the title a good idea?

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Hi guys,

I have a site with the half of the traffic coming from Google and MSN. The title of the site is used to be: "Site name - page key words" and it changes from page to page but the site name stays there.

The site name contains one important keyword too.

Now 5 days ago, I changed it to: "Page keywords - site name" The reason I changed it is because the SE traffic from google is mostly for keywords search and the SE traffic that I get from MSN is mostly for my site name search.

I really dont see any difference yet in the SE traffic and in fact both google shows the site in results with old title where as MSN shows the new title. The site gets crawled almost everyday.

Now I am thinking of going back to the original style, what do you guys think. I think it is not good to change the title frequently, but if I do this time, that will be it, I do not need to change it again. Or should I just leave it like that?

    Your help will be appreciated.

I normally dont focus my efforts on the "site name" - usually noone is competing with you for your site name so it should take little effort to get top ranking for that.

Your key phrase, however, is probably much more competetive and should be your focus.

I would reccomend keeping the keyword first.

I agree with BILZ. What you put in the title is a key factor in which search queries you will rank highly with in the major search engines. So go focus on the keyphrases as it will serve to enhance your brand/site name as well as your SE rankings.

    Okay,
thanks guys, in that case, I will just keep it as it is now. I was just worried that I changed it already but I think I changed it for good.

    Thanks once again,

When people search for your site name or keywords in your site you want them to find your homepage I'm sure. You did the right thing.

You did say that the site name contains a keyword. I've always tended towards using a wider concept for the first words in a title, narrowing the topic with following keywords.

I agree that in most cases the site name is basically irrelevant but if the name itself is a search term that blankets the theme of your site it may be worth having it upfront.

Supposing that your site was dogs-health.tld then I'd say use:

Dogs health - canine skin problems

Dogs health - choosing a healthy puppy
