Is Alexa Dying?

I just found a very interesting blog post that is a few months old but is the only source of information I've come across regarding the probable downfall of Alexa and its toolbar: http://www.boogybonbon.com/2007/09/18/alexa-seo-recessions/

I too noticed this exact same trend when researching the website marketplace industry and had no idea why till I read that post.

Does anyone have any more information on this topic or have any thoughts at all about it?

I'm very interested in learning more about this issue Alexa is having.

Its a matter of timing. Compare the drops in traffic and rank to the time they opened up the new FireFox toolbar. That seemed to be the marker for when my rank started to drop, and what a huge drop it was.

Or it could be that more and more folks are realizing the Alexa rank for what it is... bloated and inaccurate readings from a spyware toolbar.

Well, NOBODY, uses it as a search engine, and Mostly WEBMASTERS use the toolbar on THEIR own Sites....,, So IDK , i wouldnt say dead, ppl still take Alexa Rank's For Granted Especially if your site is for sell and stuff..

Alexa is important if you are on link selling or Payperpost or things like that.

I hate alexa because it is inaccurate, I can jump millions of positions in weeks, and then back to the original spot, and then not show up at all.

Our site has experienced a ten-fold increase in traffic and our Alexa ranking hasn't budged. I'm a bit skeptical about their ranking system myself.

Mine has ranged from 75K through 350k in the last two years. When they came out with an IE toolbar my ranks dropped massively (as did the ODP and DP itself). Either way, it's a matter of demographics. Certain groups seem to hold better rankings then others (with Webmaster sites and Porn being the two better ones). Yes, the results are ALL messed up and are unreliable, yet they are so pretty much based on just who is willing to install that spam filled toolbar.

Alexa rank holds far less power then Googles Page Rank, but even the PR is pretty messed up for many sites, as a GREAT site with no budget looses to a CRAP site with the power of paid links.

Your best bet is to simply turn off your options to see ANY rank, and just make the best darned site you can make, and you'd be surprised as how much better you (and your site) do ;)
