No, the competition is often not a problem. It is the unwillingness to put in the effort to make it work that's the problem.

Google is getting rich and rich. The CPC is going so high. What we paid 50cents 4 years back is now $15 to $20
    CRAZY !!!

turbovps, when you compare that to the profits you make what happens?

I do agree with you, though, that sometimes "ignorant" competitors drive the costs unnecessarily high.
However I believe ,most of the time, if your business model is solid you shouldn't have a problem that you can't solve.

I've been testing some AdWords campaigns lately and it seems that the popular keywords are very saturated, and the bids have gone too high for it to be worth it for my needs. I haven't been able to even get an impression.

It depends how competitive the keywords are you are trying to target and if you find that the phrases you are trying to target are too competitive then research in looking for a longer tail phrases that will put you in more of a smaller niche area.

Some niches, most definitely. Prices will increase until just below the point that it is not profitable. Far from saturated in most niches, though (aka much profit to be had)

Yes there is competition, but it is not such a big deal.

I can tell you one thing, 90% of the people running adwords are knuckleheads, and they don't make any money.
They'll lose their money in a few days and stop.

What I'm trying to say is, if you have the right approach, there are a lot of money to be made, yes, there is competition, but that shouldn't worry you too much. There is competition because it's profitable

I find that broad keywords can be expensive, but put in the effort to find cheap keywords + longtail keywords, you will succeed.

ive mannaged to bring down some insurance related keywords down from £1.50 to about £0.30

There is more competition today then yesterday, that's true.

But you can lower your costs if you do 3 things:

1.) get and keep a high ctr
2.) lose some money to start
    3.) be very patient
