Is there anyone out there making money out of adsense with their personal blogs and how good is the income?
To be honest it's all about traffic and then a little about the topic of your pages also. So if your personal blog has a good amount of traffic (it's relative) then yes adsense will pay. But if you have only a few hundreds visitors per day, then it won't be interesting at all.

What is the definition of effective on your terms. If you want to make the good money than you will need two things ... niche which pay good money and traffic who will click on that ads. If you are talking about high paid niches in your personal blogs and have good traffic than yes adsense is really effective.

It depend how good you blog. You need to have great content and good promotion if you want to earn from adsens, dont expect to earn alot of money by just paste the code on your blog

Some adsense ads provide with some nice income, others are quite horrible (6ct a click...) So it depends on the content and and your niche. One things I am going to recommend is not to target "The most expensive adsense keywords" Too many people target them and it's almost useless... Stick with your niche,write some good content and I am sure you will see the money beginning to pour in.
You can check if you are in a high pay niche using the adwords tool, put some usual keywords of your articles and check the average pay per click. Maybe you can also turn your personal blog in a magazine with the new Wordpress themes.
What would be good niches? I'm guessing that a good niche would be a subject where people are looking for information about something they want to buy - and then they click on an AdSense ad that sells what they are looking to buy? So, I'm guessing mobile phones, travel, cars??? Any others?
You need good unique content which can attract both search engines and to real visitors and also you need hordes of traffic if you like to make good money from your personal blog.
I think that the high pay niches are contents related to products or services that are expensive or very important in the search trends.
