    Hello,

I noticed that external links on wikipedia.org have a non follow, so what is the use of a link from it?

    Thanks,

    Paul

People find it and click it. Other sites mirror the content on wikipedia, so your link gets put there also.

    Traffic is the #1 thing.

Like Isaac said, a lot of people think copying wikipedia is a good thing, when obviously its not, but you still get backlinks.

Try searching Google for any term. Wikipedia is almost always up there, between results 1 and 5. With such a large amount of traffic, wouldn't some of it be sent to you ?

Wiki links have no SEO value. The editors will jump on you for being an SEO company and the traffic that you get from Wiki has no value.

And when was the last time you did a search and clicked on the Wiki link?

I've gotten a page on one of my websites linked to on a Wikipedia entry. It was on a topic that was kind of in the news off and on and I got some traffic from it (maybe around 10-20 uniques a day for a little while).
As was mentioned, however, the traffic will have little SEO value. So if you're strictly trying to make money off it, that'll probably be a waste of time. But if you actually have an interesting website with unique and quality content, you might see a few more loyal visitors or something like that.

I have one site linked from one article on Wiki and I must say I have a constant traffic from the article.

I'm not sure about the SEO value but if you're looking for more traffic, I'd say go for it. Though your site/page must be a good one and highly related to the topic.

No SEO value, but a daily dose of traffic. You can't truly imagine how many hits Wikipedia gets until you've successfully gotten your link on it (which is now nearly impossible unless your site has no ads or affiliate boxes).

Has Yahoo (or basically anyone other than Google) ever said that they will not follow no-follow links. One thing I can assure you is that Yahoo certainly lists no-follow links when we use the link or linkdomain command.

Google most certainly does pick up Wiki links as well but mostly it's for the traffic.

Just don't depend on it, I just lost a bunch of visitors because of a whole rewrite of an article :(.

The point of SEO is to pull in organic traffic, not Page Rank. To get a link on the top SERP site has it's bonuses, and you will not get jumped for adding a link there by the powers that be... IF you are actually adding something of value and not just trying to pull in a link. Links added should be as close to a primary source as possible. Anything less does not NEED to be there, and that is generally why links get removed.

But I guess you are correct, adding a link there does not do all that much for Search Engine Optimization...but then either does using AdWords or any other ad campaign that uses some type of nofollow, but it still has it's place for the SEO doing the work.

I've done it personally several times, as have MANY MANY MANY others. If that was not the case, then they likely would not pull in the top spots on search engines. So it does not matter if YOU use it as a reference, the fact remains that MANY do.

Stand back and look at Wiki from the standpoint of the end user, and how much it can benefit them. Those benefits will trickle down.

Wikipedia gets a ton of traffic, and unlike most other sites the resource links at the bottom do get clicked on. The link is good as a source of traffic, but not much else.

The reason we do SEO stuff is to get more traffic.
When you actually get direct traffic from wiki, why should you bother about the SEO value of it ;)

yea, articles on wiki can change, be altered, new information can come to light or current information can be disputed, so there's no telling how long the link to your site will lost. Although it does bring targeted traffic to your site, I always look at the references after reading a topic in wiki.
