Is a subdomain still considered as a different domain?

    Hi,

Simply, which is better to make a subdomain site or use a different domain when you make a new site for SEO purposes?

For example, if I am to make a blog site just for SEO, is it better to buy a new domain and make it like http://blog-example.com or does it not matter if I just use a subdomain like http://blog.example.com ?

I heard in the past (3-4 years ago) that subdomains were considered as different domains and if you get the link from the site with the subdomain, it was considered as an external link.(Therefore it's good for seo)

    Is it still the same?
(Or wasn't correct in the first place even in the past?)

I'm asking this because someone told me that these days Google dosen't consider subdmains as different domains.

    Thanks!

Subdomains on google come up as different entries in the searches. Not sure if that means anything or not. For an example, search "big fish games" - there should be a few scattered in there, some under other sites.

No, I don't think a subdomain is considered a different domain because it just isn't a new domain.

Hi again, thanks for your replies.
One of the reasons I heard subdomains considered as different domains is that some hosting companies offered subdomains for cheaper hosting prices (or something like that) in the past. I don't see similar services anymore but in the past this kind of service was popular where I lived at that time....Also even now some blog services offer subdomains like blogspot (by google!)....so the subdomains are owned by different people so they are different sites, therefore google considered them as different domains...that's the logic I heard.

Yes they are considered different domains. domain.com www.domain.com whatever.domain.com are all seen as different.

So be careful when you build up your links to your sites. Since most sites are setup for domain.com and www.domain.com to be the same. Pick one format when building links and stick to it or you will lower your incoming link count. Don't have 50 links to domain.com and 50 to www.domain.com unless that is what you really want.

No, google could not identify the difference between the maindomain and subdomain, but if you take place the two domains in same server.

A subdomain is considered a different domain to the SE. They have different Analytics, links, traffic, etc.

But it will also get different PR.

When the SEs index the main site, it does not index the subdomain at the same time. It requires a different index.

And you need to create a different XML sitemap as well.

ya it is considered as a different domain.

it is canonical domain ...each canonical domain has its own identity. Although its not a separate part of domain but behaves like different domain except name all things is different.

    e.g. What makes its different
    - Index file
    - can be pointed using 'A' Attribute (Used in Turn key Website)
    - Have to upload in web master as different identity
    - PR Ranks
    - Google Analytic
    - Yahoo Site Explorer.

What makes its similar.(does not affect domain , sub domain)
    - Alexa ranking
    - Submission in Search Engine
