heres a question i have , the title says it all. new to this type of business so please no rude comments. just want to hear from other web masters. thanks
I would say it depends on the business, but generally the "extension" doesn't matter too much. Traditionally, .net is for networks, but plenty of people are using them for other things. Can I ask why you don't want .com?
A lot of great .com's are taken by people who will never develop them and only want to make a quick dollar. (such a shame) Thats probably why he's looking into the .net
exactly , i wanted the .com but the guy that owns it wont sell. so i have to get the .net , funny he didnt register all the extentions. but hey i will. and the .net is for a hosting site im opening soon. good ? bad?
There is no problem about using a .net tld. I hate too that ppl that register the domains only for selling them a few dollars more.
.net for hosting is good. That is pretty much who it was designed for, right? The reason I asked about .com was in case there could be any legal arguments over the name.
i dont think so. i can release it now since i reg it. the domain in Q was www.wirevenom.net i like it alot and im sure some people might say its not appropriate or it sucks but all that matters is that i like it since it will be one of my new projects. might make the logo like a ethernet cable and have a snake tongue coming out. dont know yet.
I know of few .net domain doing good webhosting business like aplus.net,1plus.net ,etc. so there should not be any problem.
The only problem is that you when you promote your company, you'll have to use its address too. Say your company name is HostingDomain. Then if you promote your site as HostingDomain instead of HostingDomain.net, there is a tendancy for people to first type HostingDomain.com first.
Might be a bit late for this but I've recently come accross a nice article I may lookup again if anyone's interested. Basically I was looking at buying a set of domain names for a project of mine, and because most of the .com extensions were taken (nothing unusual about it) I've considered going for the .net ones. My plan was to use the same TLD for better brandability so I went into research. I also had .info in mind so I googled for .info reviews, there you go I found it here. Well, after reading it, I dumped the .net's and went for the .info. Of course, that was strictly related to my business plan which obviously would not apply to SteveAR and his hosting company. But, there is something else I wanted to point out. Chances are that your visitors will get it wrong, too. And you'll be driving traffic away from your website for that simple reason. That's true, Servege uses their .NET as the main domain, but they still own the .COM (!) What if some day, you get competition settled on the .com name against your .net? And that's exactly where I decided not to go for the .net TLD. Reading the whole article might give you some tips for your case, Steve. Wish you good luck!
have a look at servint.net, they are a big company that have been around a long time, so yes a .net is good enough.
yea and i have thought exaclty the same thing. but the domain has been purchased i believe in 2000 and since then hasnt really been used. the owner is just holding on to it and i dont think hes into hosting. but i do get what your saying. but wont people that are looking for me on my .net get the wrong page or page cant be found and try again? until they get me? im hoping for that since alot of the people looking for my service will be Internet savvy. so i guess im willing to take that chance but if it were any other type of site i usually go for the .com .
If the .com is gone, I either go with .net or .org Both work fine, as long as you promote it with the extension. Iv never worked around hosting, but I can't see why it should be any different.
Yep, I've had a .net with a PR4 for some time now, had no trouble with it. People tend to remember .com a bit better, though.
