Is a links page a good idea?

When I started a site a few months back I knew nothing at all about SEO.
I submitted to the search engines etc and thought it would be a good idea to join a couple of toplists and banner exchanges. To this end I threw together a links page just to put the reciprocals on http://www.9876.co.uk/links.html

Now reading through DP I'm not sure this is a good idea.I have been submitting the site to lots of directories for this last month (thanks to more advice I found here :) ) and would like to know what you guys recommend.Should I remove this page from my site?If so what would you put in it's place (if anything) for exchanging links?Would it be worth starting a directory?

    TIA.

Most of my client sites have multiple link pages and/or link directories. Depending on how extensive a collection of links you plan to obtain on the site, I would suggest looking into link directories for the flexability towards growth. I would also suggest ensuring the directory does not employ redirected links as this is a huge turnoff for those you trade with. IMHO. :)

If you have less than 50 exchange links than you can use only a link page. If you have more links than it is better to use a directory.

Generally there are few ways to deal with links:
    • Set up a link directory. If you have a big site, it's the preferred way and easiest. But it will probaby give less value to your link partners (By value I mean here PR, quality links and traffic)
    • Use link page/s - the easiest way for most of sites. If you want to exchange links with sites dealing with different themes, use few link pages, like: business, directory, seo etc.
    • Put links on content pages - this way more people will like to exchange links with you, as their links will be on pages with related conent and that's why will have more value (both PR and traffic). If you don't want to exchange links with ltoo many sites, but only with the best ones in your industry - it's for you.

My opinion is that the best way is to combine all of those:
Put most significant links on your content pages and use a directory or few link pages for others. Also it's better not to use a sipmple link page, but add some content to it too, may be some text about how the links are important etc.

Agreed though I always try to avoid the word "links" on the site, there are better more discrete descriptions

Yeah I usually turn my sites into many directories after I've gotten maybe a 100 or so links. It works pretty well. I don't think putting the words "links" on your site will be harmful. If you are a webmaster on the net who wants to have a successful site, it is in your best interest to exchange links. If a site doesn't used the word links or resources I assume they don't have a links page and then I may not want to exchange links with them.
