Is a link wheel the new fad?

I was just wondering what verteran SEOers think about link wheels. Are they as good as they are made out to be? Just curious because i'm working on one right now using 10 web 2.0 properties.

    Thanks,

    Kevin

They've been the fad since Lemonarian published his ebook on the subject a while back (either late 2008/early 2009) and has been getting more and more popular on all the IM forums since then.

A "Link Wheel" is nothing more than an entry level blog farm and comes with all the risks associated with blog farms.

The basic "wheel" structure of the concept is not anything new and it's assumed that google has been able to identify this type of thing for some time.

What really set it apart was the concept of using Web 2.0 properties in it's construction. The two together make it a powerful force for promoting a site.

To keep these site under the radar you need to build links to each spoke of the wheel from sources other than the other elements of your link wheel.

Once you "advance" beyond the basics you move into true blog farms which mix Web 2.0 sites and your own self-hosted sites (on multiple IP addresses), multiple layers, and multiple ways of building links to each element.

i wouldn't say its a new fad as people have been setting up mini site networks for some time now. while it s a good idea to setup content based pages on web 2.0 sites and link to your landing page, severe interlinking can get you in trouble. if you can do one way linking from the top sites moving down, you can get away with it but dont try to link each page with each other

Yeah, I've heard success with it. It's very popular on this other website I go to, and they say it works very well.

I'm sticking to my own thing - it works. This link wheel isn't a fad - it's been around - for some reason, ppl are talking about it more. I say forget it.

Linkwheel is an old SEO practice, and it's not the best tactic out there. Sites participating in link wheel campaign are often tagged as link farms.

Ok, so we've established that a link wheel is nothing new.

Are people that are using them having success with them? How do you get the most out of your link wheel? I've read a few good ideas above and I'm looking for a few more.

I've been having great success with Linkwheels since I became aware of this technique months ago. The most important tips I can give you are to perform good keyword research to target the right anchor text in your backlink building.

Good keywords have <50,000 competing pages in quotes and <10,000 with the allintitle search.

You also need to use unique content on each of the Web 2.0 properties. Don't be lazy and use spun content.

If you do it right, the web 2.0 properties that you set up will dominate the first page of Google results.

I think they can be useful for hitting long tail terms, as long as you mix it up.

I just love discussions on linking and how all the experts come out of the woodwork to spew out their opinions without the first fact to back them up.

We use linkswheels....we make money with linkwheels!

The question that need to be asked is...if you make money with them how do you do it.

Most of the info that I have found on the internet is very basic at best and misleading at worse. So to answer the question is using a linkwheel effective...depends on how you do it.

To those that say its like a blog farm....they are not...I have a couple pf blog farms and our linkwheels are no where close to the same thing.

SEnuke provides a service that is close to creating a link wheel....its a pretty good service. We use it for some of out linking activities but not all.

If you are looking for a quick and easy way of making money...the linkwheel is not it. They take time to set up and time to implement. But if done properly they can be very effective.

I also prefer keywords with less than 2k allintitle results.
